Haydn's so-called Great Organ Solo Mass in E flat major is among those works by Joseph Haydn which early in its history enjoyed widespread dissemination. The E flat major Mass, with an unusual scoring including two English horns in the orchestra, was composed around 1770 during the first years of Haydn's tenure as Music Director for the Court of Esterhazy. Despite the readily playable, effective part for organ, employed prominently as a solo instrument in the piece, the Missa in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae, which was composed for a Feast to the Blessed Virgin Mary, is seldom performed today. The richly orchestrated Missa in C minor K. 317 was probably one of the first church music works that Mozart composed at the beginning of 1779 as the newly appointed Salzburg court organist. With a large orchestra, choir and four soloists, the composer impressively demonstrates his skills. The nickname Coronation Mass has a long tradition and is already mentioned in the first edition of the Köchel catalogue; however, it does not go back to the premiere, which took place on one of the Easter holidays in April 1779. In all probability, the mass was performed in 1791 at the coronation celebrations in Prague for Leopold II and – after his unexpected death – in 1792 for Franz I under Antonio Salieri.

For this vocal score, Andreas Köhs has provided an improved orchestral reduction which optimally transfers the instrumental parts to the piano while ensuring playability. The vocal parts are based on the Urtext of the New Mozart Edition.

The cantata Freue dich, erloste Schar BWV 30 is one of Bach's last church cantatas. Originally composed as a parody of the cantata Angenehmes Wiederau BWV 30a for the Feast of St. John's Day in 1738, it still enjoys a great popularity today. Its extraordinary length (12 movements) made it possible for Bach to employ four vocal soloists who, together with instrumental soloists, choir and orchestra contribute to the generally festive character of this work.
