The thirty or so settings of the Mass by Johann Michael Haydn (Joseph's younger brother) are masterpieces of their class, and were greatly loved during his lifetime. As part of its Urtext complete edition Carus now presents the Missa Sancti Cyrilli et Methodii. This composition of 1758 is an early work, still written in the baroque stylistic tradition of the southern German region, Out it also reveals subjective inspiration which separates it from many mass settings by Haydn's contemporaries. With this mass dedicated to the Slavic apostles Cyrill and Methodius it is possible that Haydn applied for a position in Brno and it actually appears as if the 21-year-old composer wanted to present a masterpiece demonstrating his skills. This mass is published here in the first edition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5401300.

Handel composed his only oratorio in German between 1716 and 1717 basing it on the then popular Passion text by Barthold Heinrich Brockes entitled “Der für die Sünde der Welt gemarterte und sterbende Jesus†(“The Story of Jesus, Suffering and Dying for the Sins of the Worldâ€). Handel’s affinity to opera is evident in the musical realisation of the emphatic text as he creates a synthesis between traditional Protestant church music and the depiction of human passion in the manner of opera seria. This edition is based on the corresponding volume of the “Halle Handel Edition†(BA 4021). The full score, parts and vocal score have been newly engraved. The piano reduction has been simplified and brought up to today’s standards, thus making it much more manageable to play.

Written for the Enchanted Voices CD, this is one of many settings of texts either from the Beatitudes (or springing from them) available from this composer. For Solo and SS divisi, a cappella, the music has a light, ethereal feeling. ââ¬ÅBeatiââ¬Â can be taken as a sort of ââ¬ÅBlessed are theyââ¬Â prefix for the movements which are not direct quotes from the Beatitudes. This movement is a unison, chant-like setting of the Latin texts for Genesis 20:13 (ââ¬ÅThou shalt do me this kindnessââ¬Â¦Ã¢â¬Â) and Numbers 11:17 (ââ¬ÅAnd I will take of thy spiritââ¬Â). The soloist begins and sometimes takes over from the choral voices. Mostly unison except for about ten measures (out of the 69) in two-part texture and four measures in three parts. Duration 4:39

Invictus: A Passion addresses one of the world’s most powerful stories through the lens of the modern world. The texts, written or inspired by women, describe not only human suffering and persecution but also the human capacity for love and humility in the face of tyranny. Composer Howard Goodall is uniquely suited to bring these texts to life with music of emotional clarity and sweeping force. This excerpt is scored for soprano solo, SATB choir and piano. This fourth movement of the larger work is inspired by the extraordinary story of Irena Sendler née Krzyżanowska, a Polish nurse and head of Å»egota, the Polish Council to Aid Jews in the Second World War, whose personal interventions saved the lives of approximately 2,500 Jewish children in the Warsaw Ghetto, smuggling them to safety, acts of humanitarian bravery that eventually caused her arrest and torture by the Gestapo. She is honoured as Righteous Amongst the Nations at Yad Vashem, Jerusalem. The Latin texts of this movement are taken from the Book of Lamentations (“My eye hath run down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people. My enemies have chased me and caught me like a bird, without cause…â€) and from Psalm 142, the Old Testament being the meeting-point of Sendler’s Catholicism and the Jewish tradition of those whose lives she saved. Duration 6:19.

“The Glagolitic Massâ€, one of the 20th century masterpieces of sacred music, has a very complex genesis and constitutes an intricate editorial challenge. This new critical edition presents two different versions of the work in two separate volumes (B/5-I, BA 6862 und B/5-II, BA 6863): the “September 1927†version which the composer completed before the first rehearsals and subsequent premiere in Brno and the version he partly reworked for the first Prague performance in April 1928. This second version was then revised further and published after Janacek’s death by Universal Edition Wien in 1930. Known as the “final authorised version“, it has been newly edited for this publication which is based on the engraver’s copy of the score prepared by Janacek’s regular copyist Václav Sedlacek. The new Barenreiter edition also contains an informative preface (Cz/Eng/Ger/Fr/Ru) as well as detailed critical commentary. The “September 1927†version can be seen more as a supplement and appears without text commentary.
