In 1828 Berlioz wrote the Huit scènes de Faust. The work was soon withdrawn but almost twenty years later each of the eight scenes found a place in the Lgende dramatique La damnation de Faust dedicated to Franz Liszt. The first part of the Damnation exposes the figure of Faust and has an introductory nature. From the second part onwards, the course of action is largely based on Goethe’s drama.Contrasting characters and dramatic effect are of central importance in understanding Berlioz’s musical thought and his compositional process. Magic and fairy tale, incantations and ghosts, have been the ever-recurring themes of opera since the Baroque. It is precisely this fantasy in Berlioz's Faust, the “Opra de Concert en Quatre actsâ€, which comes very close to the spirit of Goethe's presentation.

Erschallet, ihr Lieder (BWV 172) is one of those early Bach cantatas which were often revived at Leipzig. The first performance of this work was given in Weimar 1714. Although only a few instrumental parts from this performance are extant, it may be assumed that at that time the cantata already had the form familiar to us from its first Leipzig revival. It was given in C major (church pitch, corresponding to D major in chamber pitch), and the first number was intended to be repeated at the end of the work.

Handel set the myth about the love of the shepherd Acis for the sea nymph Galatea from Ovid’s “Metamorphoses†a total of three times: in the cantata “Aci, Galatea e Polifemo†HWV 72 (1708), the masque “Acis and Galatea†HWV 49a (1718) and finally the pasticcio-like serenata “Acis and Galatea†HWV 49b (1732) of which the original version is now made available in its complete form for the first time.A particular charm is provided by the use of two languages in the serenata. The work was originally conceived in English, as was required for the first performance. However, Handel’s Italian singers were criticised for their poor command of English, – so in the end, many numbers were sung in Italian. The extensive appendix to the vocal score includes the additional arias and newly composed movements for the versions used in the 1734 and 1736 performances.

Benvenuto Cellini, premiered in 1838, is inspired by the life of the legendary Florentine goldsmith and Renaissance figure. The premiere was a disatster yet even by Berliozâ??s high standards it contains music of exceptional inventiveness and beauty. The work is challenging not least due to the three versions which exist:I The original version (Paris 1) as Berlioz composed itII The version premiered in Paris (Paris 2) after rehearsal and copied into an archival full scoreIII The Weimar version based on the revival in 1852 following changes suggested by LisztOur edition offers a solution to the problem of publishing operas which have been heavily revised by their composers, so that any of its many versions may be adopted on stage today.

Schubertâ??s Mass in E-flat major is the last of his six settings of the Ordinarium Missae (Mass ordinary) and also his most important work in this genre. The mass is full of color and drama, infused with the spirit of confession. For many choirs, it is on the wish list of those works they would like to sing someday. But what happens if you donâ??t have enough singers, money is tight, and your venue is on the small side? Here the experienced arranger and orchestral musician Joachim Linckelmann has a great solution. His version for soloists, choir and chamber orchestra requires only 7 winds rather than the original 13. The string parts, while identical to the original, can now also be scaled back. The vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are completely untouched by the arrangement, so that the vocal scores and choral scores of the Carus Urtext edition can also be used for performanceâ?¢,A large-scale work now arranged for smaller choirs â?¢,13 winds of the original version reduced to 7 instrumentsâ?¢,Vocal scores and choral scores of the original version can still be usedâ?¢,carus plus: The work (original version) is available in the app carus music, the Choir Coach, as well as in our Carus Choir Coach series (audio only).. Score available separately - see item CA.4066000.

Beethoven described his grandly conceived â??Missa solemnisâ? as â??my greatest workâ? and sold manuscript copies to some of the subscribers even before it had appeared in print. This Urtext edition takes into account all the sources including the old and the new complete editions whose relationship is clearly explained in a stemma. In several passages the renowned Beethoven specialist Barry Cooper has arrived at variant readings, such as in the â??Sanctusâ?, where the choir enters instead of the soloists, rather than coming in at â??Pleni sunt coeliâ?. No less worthy of mention is the addition of the soloists to the choir in most of the â??Credoâ?. These matters and many other editorial decisions are documented in the detailed Critical Commentary (Eng). The appendix contains Beethovenâ??s arrangement of the Gregorian chant â??Tantum ergoâ? for the first time. This was composed at the same time as the â??Missa solemnisâ? and most probably stands in a close relation to it.This edition is designed for everyone seeking a combination of a reliable musical text and well-founded editorial suggestions for a successful performance of this masterpiece.

The motets and choral pieces, composed with the distinctive features of the Madeleine organ in mind, enchant with their colourful, floating harmonies and convey a certain intimacy even with their ritualized Latin texts. These works are very well suited for performances by small vocal ensembles. A novelty is the inclusion of the double bass part (ad libitum) which does not appear consistently in the first editions but corresponds to the musical practice at the Madeleine.Numerous gems such as the â??Cantique de Jean Racineâ? or the â??Messe basseâ? are published in performing editions based on the musical text of the â??Gabriel Faur â?? Å?uvres complètesâ?.
