These stringsets arrange seven classic melodies from 'The King and I' and 'South Pacific' for intermediate string ensemble. The arrangements are relatively straightforward great fun to play and will make the perfect programme for the end of term concert.

Originally to be called ‘Marina’ – String Quintet for twoviolins viola and two cellos arising following Roberts first encounter with Marina Tsvetaeva - 'I could never set her poetry to music but her passionate unquenchable voice seemed to want to be embodied musically...in the sound and ambivalent register of the Viola. Arranged for two Violins Viola and two Cellos. Throughout square pauses (G.P.) are variable in length their duration determined bythe performers depending upon the tension of the moment.

Composer's Notes 'Popule Meus is a meditation on the Judaic and Christian text ?O my People whathave I done to you?? but itis also a Universalist contemplation of the wholesale rejection of God by modern man. However much manrejects God he cannot escape Him and indeed he is condemned to the supernatural by his deiformnature. InHindu terms he is the Absolute Ayam Atma Brahma (The Self is the Absolute).In this work the solo cello is the All-Compassionate One while the timpani represent man in his vain andpointless rejection. Although the solocello and strings and the timpani share the same material (four ideas aregradually revealed and they revolve four times during the piece) the timpani music is violent and becomesincreasingly frenzied and contracted while thecello and strings remain still and serene.So even in winning the Darkness loses and even in losing the Light wins. Passion Resurrection andRedemption; or in Hindu terms Atma (The Absolute) alone is real Maya (The Relative) ismerely illusion.'

Think Benjamin Britten's Young Person's Guide but just for strings! Written to be used for outreach or recruiting concerts, this piece is a great way to educate audiences of all ages about the different instruments of the string orchestra. All of your students will love getting a chance in the spotlight as the simple main theme is followed by five variations, each featuring a different section (yes, Violins I and II get their own separate variation!). The piece concludes with a rousing 6/8 finale in which phrases of the theme are tossed from section to section, giving your audience a final review of what they have learned.
