Commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra this concertino was originally conceived as a part of a complete educational concertprogram. Four concertini each featuring a different instrumental family within the chamber orchestra are played in succession to demonstrate the characteristic sounds of those instruments. The music is thematically related but not identical to the Concertino for Chamber Orchestra (parts available on rental from the publisher) which serves as the program's closer demonstrating all of theorchestral sections playing together. This program is suggested by the composer for orchestra concerts however each instrumental concertino can beperformed individually and stands quite effectively on its own as a short chamber recital piece.

This work was arranged for the Myers Park Repertory Orchestra. The concerto is the third from the set of opus 3 concerti titled L'estro Harmonico ('The Harmonic Inspiration'). The work originally for solo violin and orchestra has been adapted for 1st violins and ripieno parts distributed amongst the 2nd violins violas and basso continuo.

Par ALBENIZ ISAAC. A spell-binding exploration of the music of Spain, Fantasía Española features four exciting yet contrasting sections and challenging parts for all players. Three of Spain's most famous composers are represented in this medley arranged by Bob Phillips. The piece begins with an exciting, driving excerpt from 'Asturias (Leyenda)', by Isaac Albéniz, which, though written for piano, is most often heard on guitar. The setting of this section allows the violins and violas a display of virtuosity with its unrelenting rhythmic drive. Beautiful, lyric, and emotional, 'Tango in D,' also by Albéniz, will showcase the musicianship of the entire orchestra. Originally written for piano, the strings will shine in this second section of the arrangement. The third section is the slow and lyric, 'Adelita.' Drawn from the deep treasure of Spanish guitar music and written by the father of classical guitar, Francisco Tárrega, this piece is simply beautiful. The medley concludes with 'Danza Ritual del Fuego' from the ballet El Amor Brujo. Written to be used for outreach or recruiting concerts, this piece is a great way to educate audiences of all ages about the different instruments of the string orchestra. All of your students will love getting a chance in the spotlight as the simple main theme is followed by five variations, each featuring a different section (yes, Violins I and II get their own separate variation!). The piece concludes with a rousing 6/8 finale in which phrases of the theme are tossed from section to section, giving your audience a final review of what they have learned. Grieg Holberg Suite (From Holberg\'s Time) Op.40 (Full Score) Suite in the Olden Style for String Orchestra To celebrate the 200th birthday of the playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754), a statue was erected in his honour in 1884. Edvard Grieg, who, like Holberg, was born in Bergen, was commissioned to write an open-air cantata for the ceremony. But he also refers to Holberg in his instrumental music. The result was a ?powdered wig piece? (as Grieg wrote to his publisher) that hearkens back to Holberg?s era ? a historicising suite of baroque dances for piano, ranging from an exhilarating prelude and several dance numbers to a Bachian ?air? and an impetuous ?rigaudon?. Later Grieg arranged his ?Suite in the Olden Style? for string orchestra. This version became one of his most popular compositions.
