At first glance the Introduzioni appear to be lively three-movement works with a standardized order of movements and harmonic order: fast - slow - fast major - minor - major. With regard to style the short symphonies resemble the Neapolitan opera buffa the descriptive title Introduzioni implying the function the introduction to stage works.With his 6 Introduzioni teatrali composed in 1735 the talented Italian violinist and composer Pietro Antonio Locatelli who had lived in Amsterdam since 1729 perhaps paid tribute to the great demand on the part of the Dutch amateur orchestras. But were the master and his oeuvre actually as well adjusted as it seems? Locatelli'sworks were well known throughout Europe until the end of the 18th century although the composer led a very secluded life. He had no students and never performed in public. In his adopted city Amsterdam he worked freely without being controlled by the church or the court. An unusual lifestyle for an 18th-century composer – and also an unusual composition?

Grieg Holberg Suite (From Holberg\'s Time) Op.40 (Full Score) Suite in the Olden Style for String Orchestra To celebrate the 200th birthday of the playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754), a statue was erected in his honour in 1884. Edvard Grieg, who, like Holberg, was born in Bergen, was commissioned to write an open-air cantata for the ceremony. But he also refers to Holberg in his instrumental music. The result was a ?powdered wig piece? (as Grieg wrote to his publisher) that hearkens back to Holberg?s era ? a historicising suite of baroque dances for piano, ranging from an exhilarating prelude and several dance numbers to a Bachian ?air? and an impetuous ?rigaudon?. Later Grieg arranged his ?Suite in the Olden Style? for string orchestra. This version became one of his most popular compositions. It was the Weihnachtskonzert (Christmas concerto) in C major that won special popularity continuing a tradition which was cultivated by Corelli with his pastoral at the end of Op. 6 No. 8 or by Torelli in his Op. 8 No. 6 and reaching to the pastoral in Händel's Messiahs and to the sinfonia in the second cantata of Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas oratorium. This finally originates from the music-making of shepherds - coming from the Abruzzi and from Calabria to Rome at Christmas to play the shawm and the bagpipes in front of the cribs. Hence the popular consecutive thirds and the sustained bass tones characterizing the first Largo a genuine siciliano in the rocking typically dotted 12/8 time.
