Nymphea Reflection is a work by renowned composer Kaija Saariaho, arranged for String Orchestra. Commissioned by the Schleswig Holstein Festival, it was first performed on the 16th of August 2001 in Elmshorn, Germany by Sinfonietta Cracovia, conducted by John Axelrod.Saariaho states that the starting point for Nymphea Reflection came from the idea of arranging her string quartet Nymphea. Originally working on a straight arrangement, she eventually realised that this would be very difficult, and she'd need to find a new way of composing that particular piece of music. She designed a formal concept for each of the six sections, imbuing them with very different characters. Her simulation of electronic processing by means of orchestration is an innovative take on a new form, while the effect of the poem by Arseniy Tarkovsky, whispered by the musicians gives a haunting new perspective to both music and words. / Orchestre A Cordes

Josef Suk played second violin in the Bohemian String Quartet. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert.Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian 'St. Wenceslas? hymn. The hymn's message - a plea for the well-being of the Czech people, directed at their patron saint - was immediately understood by the audience.The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914 - the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914, played by the Czech Philharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. Par CLARKE JEREMIAH. This arrangement of 'The Prince of Denmark March,' or 'Trumpet Voluntary,' provides the perfect setting for advocacy and striving for excellence since it is so recognizable. Three different versions of the final 8 bars, containing incorrect notes, are included. Each version contains an increasing percentage of correct pitches. Each represents a different letter grade. Play all four versions and then explain to parents and administration that the A+, 100% correct version is what we do every day in orchestra. All sections play the melody in this piece, still providing a solid musical setting in a novelty piece. Audience members are sure to recognize it which makes it perfect for finding 'errors.' Along with the 'real' music for the final 8 bars, three other versions are included. The first version has 80% of the correct notes and 20% incorrect.
