Nordgren has had a close partnership with the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra, and much of his work is in fact scored for string orchestra. Transe-choral for 15 strings proceeds from timbre textures via unison passages to thick webs that finally clarify to become beautiful major chords. This work is in two movements. In the first, the parallel stream of consciousness coexists uneasily and a group of violins with retuned open strings is used to produce a cyclic figure in bare timbres, like revolving crystal. The second movement develops the idea of a melismatically-decorated monody to which the orchestration gradually provides depth. lt is taken up by a solo violin which alternates with passionate cluster!like passages, ultimately reaching a paradisiacal F sharp major chord on which the work closes.

Sibelius composed this short (only five minutes long) Romance in C Op. 42 in 1903; the work was first performed in Turku in March 1904. The Romance is not a concerto movement in disguise, but features the dark, dense string writing typical of Sibelius. Nearly all of the orchestral arrangements were made years after the original compositions for voice and piano.Yet even though the arrangements were made in a very short period of time Sibelius handled the combination of solo voice and orchestra in all songs with equal mastery sometimes creating dark and dramatic atmospheres (in Pa verandan vid havet) sometimes radiant colorful impressions (in Soluppgang) or light-colored transparent textures (in Varen flyktar hastigt) and always basing his ideas on the poetic idea of the song while discovering refined ways of supporting it.

The serenade flourished in Mozart's era, but with Brahms the genre experienced a new surge in popularity in the 19th century. Dvorák's cheerful and relaxed op. 22 came into being in 1875, during a very happy time for him both professionally and privately. Heput his personal stamp on the five-movement composition by incorporating stylized Slavonic dances. The spirited finale captivates by restating themes from the previous movements. Since its premiere in 1876 the work, with its melodic richness and particular harmonic modulations, has enjoyed great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Today it is among Dvorák's most popular and most frequently performed compositions. As well as the autograph and printed editions, the composer's copy of the printed score with autograph corrections and additions has been consulted for Henle's Urtext edition.
