This previously-unpublished Concerto a Quadro presumably started life as a concerto for the standard Baroque forces of flute, strings and continuo, now otherwise unknown; it is preserved in its surviving form for flute, violin, viola and cello in a set of manuscript parts apparently copied by an amateur musician in Sweden. Although unlikely to be the work of Handel, as a rare early example of music for flute quartet it is an attractive extension to a repertoire otherwise dominated by the works of Mozart and his contemporaries. In the present publication, editorial figuring in the cello part allows for the possibility of expanding the texture with additional continuo instruments.

This piece reflects Janácek’s memories of childhood and youth in his native Hukvaldy and the Augustinian Abbey in Brno. Kryštof Maratka, a Czech composer resident in France and a great admirer of Janácek, has arranged the original version to produce a welcome addition to the string quartet repertoire.Youth for wind sextet, is a masterpiece from Janácek’s late period (1924). Maratka has successfully managed to transform the concise winds’ sound that give this work its unique flavour into the timbre of the strings, thereby creating a “third string quartet” of the composer.

Tiina Myllärinen's (b. 1979) (Bad) Dreams come true for strings quartet (2022) was composed when war broke out in Europe. The composer tells: The shock, and the daily news barrage of battles could not help making an impression on my work and its material. I wondered what dreams and plans people had in Ukraine before the war, and how everything became a nightmare in a single night. Terror, fear and tension found their way into the work, along with memories of life in the past and dreams of a different future. The work is dedicated to the people of Ukraine; to the dreams that will hopefully soon come true. This product includes the full score and a set of parts.Tiina Myllärinen’s music has been described as cheerfully inquisitive, vigorous and original. Her works include Squarcio for ensemble, the orchestral what? (2010) and Traces (2013, commissioned by the Pro Musica Foundation and premiered at the Helsinki Music Centre on 5 June 2014) and Three Songs for voice, guitar and cello (2007).
