Nethertheles, it is worth drawing attention to the third movement, the minuet, which represented something of a testing ground for contrasting tradition with progress, history with the present, and formal with frivolous, which these popular dances may have symbolised. Stylistic hanges heading towards Romanticism are evident also in the way the work's melodic layer is organise. The Józef Stefani's advanced compositional skills prove his crucial contribution to the evolution of the string quartet on Polish soil. Josef Suk played second violin in the Bohemian String Quartet. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert.Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian 'St. Wenceslas? hymn. The hymn's message - a plea for the well-being of the Czech people, directed at their patron saint - was immediately understood by the audience.The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914 - the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914, played by the Czech Philharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. Bach would almost certainly have approved of this string quartet arrangement of his famous concerto for violin and oboe (BWV 1060) by John Cooley as he was well known for making arrangements of his own works, according to instrumental resources at his disposal. Bach himself made an arrangement of this piece for two solo harpsichords and string orchestra. It is quite ?notey? but straightforward and accessible technically to reasonably good players as there are no tricky rhythms or high notes. As well as this Bach concerto arrangement, SJ Music has also published John Cooley?s arrangements of Mozart?s piano duets K497 and K521 for piano trio and piano quartet respectively, Bach?s organ Passacaglia and Fugue for string quartet, and one of Purcell?s trio sonatas for string trio. / Date parution : 2022-03-16/ Répertoire / Quatuor à Cordes

Mon deuxième quatuor à cordes, Crescent Scratches, s'inscrit dans la continuité du premier, Scratches, sans toutefois recourir au dispositif électronique qui, dans le premier quatuor, me permettait d'amplifier les timbres et de transformer le son en temps réel.Le terme de 'crescent scratch' provient des techniques de jeu développées par les DJ sur leurs platines vinyles ('scratch' ou 'scratching') que l'on retrouve dans le hip-hop et les musiques industrielles.Crescent Scratches est conçu à partir de deux principales idées : le glissando saturé (fréquemment pulsé), assimilable au 'scratch', provoqué par l'aller-retour du disque sur la platine, et la notion de boucle qui consiste à reproduire une même séquence, variée ou non. J'ai conçu des boucles et agi sur leur vitesse d'exécution, sur leur superposition en strates et leur traitement par caractéristiques de timbre. Cela finit par rendre quasiment imperceptible le retour des boucles - un phénomène qui m'a particulièrement intéressé dans cette composition. La boucle se meut en micro-élément, moteur d'une intense activité dans une macrostructure, cette macrostructure elle-même étant dès lors perçue comme une masse totalement saturée en évènements.La continuité entre ces deux quatuors se situe pour moi du côté du timbre et plus précisément dans la notation des différentes positions et pressions d'archet engendrant une large palette de sonorités saturées créant comme une aura autour du son des instruments. L'idée de 'scratch' comme onomatopée décrivant une rayure, une éraflure, une rupture ou une déchirure reste également au centre du propos de Crescent Scratches.Au-delà de l'électronique, l'endroit où se décèle la différence entre ces deux quatuors est dans la structuration de la forme et la gestion des événements. Crescent Scratches s'organise en un bloc d'une grande densité dans le traitement simultané des quatre instruments qui s'unissent là où, dans Scratches, j'articulais la forme en une succession de moments en solo, duo, trio et tutti.Yann Robin / Quatuor A Cordes
