After years of several personal and creative crises, the last two years of Beethoven's life were marked by an irrepressible creative urge that was directed almost exclusively towards the string quartet genre.Of all these late works, it is the Quartet in A minor op. 132 that most impressively addresses the overcoming of the depression of the past years. The middle of the five movements is aCanzona di ringraziamentoentitled:Holy Song of Thanksgiving of a recovered person to the deity in the Lydian key.In this movement a slow introduction is followed by the heading:Feeling renewed strength. Due to the middle movement full ofdivine power, this string quartet is certainly one of Beethoven's most emotional compositions. For this new edition of the Quartet op. 132, Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar consulted the autograph as well as several sets of parts corrected by Beethoven, enabling him to correct countless inconsistencies and unconvincing editorial decisions of previous editions.

The concerts and exhibits of the Cleveland Museum of Art were an important formative influence for me during my student days. So when the invitation came to create a new work celebrating this institution on its seventy-fifth anniversary, I was not only happy to accept, but knew immediately that I wanted to write a piece that would somehow relate specifically to the museum. I decided to make the work a reflection on a painting in the museum's collection: Zurbaran's The Holy House of Nazareth. My quartet is not program music in a narrative sense, but rather a kind of meditation that takes its tone from this painting's remarkable integration of intense affect, mysterious repose and secret geometry. Besides Zurbaran's painting, the piece is occupied with a purely musical object of contemplation: the hymn tune Picardy, best known with the text Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence. This tune permeates the harmonic and melodic life of the quartet, sometimes appearing in a very simple, straightforward fashion, but often hidden amidst more complex structures. I was attracted to the melody for its musical qualities, but later realized that the hymn's text also resonates with the mood of the painting; the words speak of a reverent awe, of cherubim with sleepless eye, and of the mystery of the Incarnate Word who must suffer: King of kings, yet born of Mary...

Like so many of his compatriots, the Czech born Vaclav Pichl spent much of his working life in Vienna (where the Empress Maria Theresa, preferred him to Mozart), but with a period working for Dittersdorf (in what is now Rumania) and nearly twenty years spent in Milan. His compositions were performed at EszterhA!za by Haydn, who had a set of Pichl's new quartets copied in 1780 (he wrote over 30 quartets in all). His compositions were performed at EszterhA!za by Haydn, who had a set of Pichl's new quartets copied in 1780 (he wrote over 30 quartets in all).

The 3rd String Quartet was originally composed in 1982-3 to a commission from The Adelaide Festival, and premiered by The Petra Quartet in 1983. Subsequent to this quartet, I have composed two more; No. 4 in 1986 and No. 5 in 2002.The offer to re-publish this work, led me to begin by a process of amendment, but ended in the composition of a virtually new quartet! Only parts of the original quartet have been retained. I also chose to 'frame' (in my case this means an inspirational focus and filter), the quartet in a new way too.In Flight Music keeps the 4-movement format of the original quartet, but is now directly linked to a life-long interest in flight. The first two movements are concerned with aspects of humans in flight, whilst the last two deal with insects and birds respectively.Since all my music is these days preceded by visualisations in the form of drawings, wherever possible, this quartet might be performed with the four drawings, one for each movement, back-projected behind the players.Digital copies of these drawings may be obtained from Schott Music.Edward Cowie.Maurens. France. August, 2010.

‘Bella Ciao’ originated as an Italian folk song, stemming all the way from the late 19th century. Many versions have since appeared over the years, but the song now has a new lease of life owing to a new dance adaption as well as its feature as the theme for the Netflix series La Casa de Papel, which has inspired Anthony Gröger to create this dynamic arrangement for string quartet.‘Bella Ciao’ is van oorsprong een aansprekend Italiaans volksliedje uit het einde van de 19e eeuw waar in de loop der tijd vele versies van zijn gemaakt. Jahrhundert.
