Belgian percussionist and composer Theo Coutelier is most well-known for performing the solo part of the premiere of Darius Milhaud's Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra, Op. 109. As a composer, he wrote a variety of repertoire pieces for percussion instruments, for which there did not previously exist many works. This volume contains eighteen etudes for timpani with piano accompaniment. Unique about this collection is that each accompaniment was composed by a different Belgian composer of the era, including Jean Absil, Georges Colin, Jef Maes, Yolande Uyttenhove, amongst others. As of 2019, this edition includes a newly engraved solo timpani part in addition to the manuscript piano accompaniment, wheras previous editions only included the full score.

I spent more time on the creation of the Study in three movements than on other orchestral works that were longer. This usually surprises people who don't write. However, the more instrumental limitations, the more difficult it is to elaborate a wide and coherent musical discourse. That is what I tried to do in this work: to wake up the sleeping giant and let the drums sing reinforcing their tectonic character, their caustic rhythms and their ancestral accents. I kept the purpose of the technique, even if it looked sophisticated and using fresh ideas that are direct and instinctive. Miquel Pardo.
