I've always been fascinated by the depth of expression in the song cycles of Robert Schumann, and have tried, in these two pieces, to emulate that using the trombone. Why the trombone? Well, it has a rich history of being 'paired' with the voice in choral music but, if I'm really honest, as a trumpet player I've always been a little bit envious of the trombone's lyrical elegance. The music, in both of these works, has a lot of 'dialogue' between the trombone and piano, I really did think of them as communicating - only without using words.

Fanfare and Processional for Trombone and Piano was written in 1978 for Trombonist Daniel Bochard. The work was first premiered that year in recital at the University of British Columbia's School of Music. The work has two very distinct themes: the 1st theme, Fanfare which consists of dramatic leaps of 4th's and octaves somewhat reminiscent of Hindemith. The 2nd theme: the stately Processional, is based on the first three notes of a diatonic scale. The scale presents itself in many different guises throughout the 5 1/2 minute work. Haydn composed over 100 compositions, each in three movements, for his wealthy employer Nicolas Esterhazy, who played the six-string instrument called a Baryton, which in shape looked much like our modern day cello, but, of course, with six rather the cello four strings. His original scores were composed of three lines: the solo part, an inner filler part for viola and a bass part. I have realized the piano part. Originally written for Cello, Ralph Sauer's brilliant arrangement of the Pergolesi Sinfonia (Sonata) for Trombone and Piano (or Harpsichord) has become a standard work in the solo repertoire. This new edition which replaces the previous one comes with some notable changes. Below is Mr. Sauer's description.This new edition of the Pergolesi Sinfonia in F is an update of the original version which was first published 40 years ago (!) and is now permanently out of print. Movements one, two, and three are essentially the same. I have corrected a few errors in the keyboard part and also revised some of the notationâ€â€notably, grace notes are now placed correctly. (The original publisher insisted that they should be placed after barlines, causing confusion as to whether they were to be played on the beat or before the beat.)In the last movement, there are now two places where the keyboard takes over the solo line. In addition to providing much needed rest for the trombonist, it gives a change of color and a chance for the keyboard player to be the soloist for a few measures.The original version of the last movement is also included as an appendix for those who would rather perform the original.Ralph Sauer

Arnold Schoenberg's Six Little Pieces, Opus 19, originally for Piano, were published in 1913 at a time when the composer was reacting to his feelings of the excesses of the Romantic Period. They were composed concurrently with his gigantic work Gurre-Lieder. The first five pieces were written in one day and the last one shortly after the death of Gustav Mahler as a rumored tombeau or memorial. Mr. Sauer has deftly arranged these six short pieces of around 5 minutes in length for advanced performers.

John Dowland (1563-1626) was an English Renaissance composer, singer and lutenist. He is well known for his melancholy songs and instrumental music, especially for lute and guitar. Mr. Beghtol's lovely transcription for intermediate Trombone is a wonderful short work that combines lyrical and Renaissance dance styles. The Trombone part is in bass clef.

Max Warnecke's Konzertstuck is characteristic of the nineteenth-century solo Trombone tradition. At six minutes in duration, it is considerably shorter than contemporary solos of the time such as the Grafe Concerto. Like the David Concertino it uses similar martial-style opening and closing themes with a lyrical middle section. The solo and piano accompaniment are of medium difficulty and appropriate for school recitals or professional performances.
