I remember well when I began to write these pieces: I sat down at the piano in the conservatory, which was almost completely empty at the time... and I improvised the first chords of the first piece. After that I wrote the theme. The music rang loudly in that large auditorium and I could hear how it echoed about the empty corridors of the conservatory... it reminded me of the overture from Charles Gounod's Faust, as my hands still played out the melodies, stretching the limits of the theme which would become, in a sense, the introduction to the whole cycle. Sibelius wrote the five-minute Romance in 1903 for string orchestra, originally titling it Andante. However he was persuaded to change the name about five years later by a critic's review. In 1903, Sibelius was still composing in a Romantic style, not the austere sounds heard later-on after he composed the 4th Symphony. Romance is made up of three sections; a slow Andante, a faster middle section and a slow third section. Mr. Sauer has distilled the music down to a lovely solo for Trombone and Piano. This crowd-pleaser will work well for advanced performers.

Legende fur Posaune und Klavier by early 20th Century Danish composer Axel Jorgensen was forgotten for quite a while but has been rediscovered, edited and recorded by noted Danish Trombonist and educator Niels-Ole Bo Johansen. The work is in a late Romantic style, about 5 minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced intermediate level performers (range is up to a high B-flat and down to a pedal B-flat). The beautifully performed sample is by Mr. Johansen and pianist Karl Kaltoft from the CD, The French Connection.
