Henry Wolking's The Best Dam Trombone Quintet Ever may just be! It is a fun, feel-good piece to perform and to listen to. The undulating rhythms and close harmonies produce a pleasing mood with a hint of a jazz feel. The music gives you a big hug. Here is a description of the work by the composer: In the summer of 2017 my wife and I moved to the Nevada Dam town of Boulder City. The town began as a construction camp in early 1930s for the workers of the Boulder Dam (later renamed the Hoover Dam). The dam is one of the worlds great construction projects of the 20th century and has over a million yearly visitors. My house is less than ten minutes away from the dam, and because the dam in one way or another affects everyone living in this unique Nevada town, my newest trombone quintet (composed in January 2018) is the best, well you get the picture. It is a high energy single movement work inspired by the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Ranges are fairly moderate with a high C# in the first trombone at the end. This is a fun romp for five dam fine trombonists. The 4 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Here is a description of this beautiful work by the composer: Reflection and Celebration for 8-part Trombone Ensemble is a musical homage to a man who was revered for his mentorship, musical intellect and delightful humor. The work opens with a somber melodic solo, capturing the noble spirit of this great mentor. Several repetitive 5-note ascending motives follow which is a symbolic reference to students learning and accomplishing under Conklin's mentorship. The bold fanfare style (in measure 32) is presented to capture the presence and tall stature of Conklin. Finally, Conklin's down-to-earth personality and his infectious humor is referenced (in measure 83). Even the fanfare theme returns in a faster tempo, thus highlighting the frivolity, lightheartedness, and wisdom of this adored music teacher. The music is about 6 1/2 minutes in length and is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

Bach's Fantasia & Fugue in C minor, BWV 537 is a work for Organ written around the year 1723 while the composer was in residence in Weimar.

Bach composed many of his greatest organ works during this period.

The music of the Fantasia is lush and ornate. The Fugue is an amazing 130 bars in length.


This work was transcribed for orchestra in 1921 by Edward Elgar who mourned after the death of his wife. He was to orchestrate the Fugue and Richard Strauss agreed to do the Fantasia, however after two years Elgar completed the entire work as Strauss never held up his part of the bargain.

Mr. Sauer has subtly added phrasings, breaths and articulations to the original score to aid in the performance for Trombone choir.

The music is about eight minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced performers.

Motet Furchte dich nicht, BWV 228 was certainly written for a funeral (the text comes from Isaiah), however the date of composition is not certain but likely written during his Weimar period. Mr. Sauer has done a magnificent job transcribing all six of Bach's choral motets BWV 225-230 for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. This is a major undertaking. All are very worthy additions to the Trombone Ensemble repertoire. This work for 8-part Trombone ensemble is in two movements and about 7 1/2 minutes in length. This music is appropriate for advanced performers. The top two voices have parts supplied in both alto and tenor clef.

Stephansdom is a new composition, descriptive of the iconic St. Stephan's Cathedral in central Vienna. Ryan Diefendorfer wrote this work for the Indiana University Trombone Ensemble for Bass Trombone solo and Trombone Choir (6-part) to be performed by Carl Lenthe at the 2012 Eastern Music Festival. Ryan's work was awarded the winner of the 2012 Eastern Trombone Workshop National Composition Competition.

St. Stephen's Cathedral, also known as Stephansdom, is one of Vienna's most remarkable city icons. Dating back to 1137, Stephandsom towers above the rest of Vienna's skyline and has been a constant presence in the lives of the Viennese for nearly one thousand years. Among the buildings that the Viennese find closest to their hearts, Stephansdom is certainly one of them

I. Groundbreaking
The first movement depicts the troubles that St. Stephen's Cathedral had in getting its groundbreaking as a church. The opening of the piece marks the celebration of the Viennese when St. Stephen's was first constructed in 1137, during the Romanesque era. However, the church faced many issues—from being destroyed by the Babenberg Empire to being decimated by a fire—before the church began its construction in the Gothic style in 1307. The first movement depicts these struggles before resolving to an open chord.


II. Steffl
Steffl, the nickname for Stephansdom's soaring north tower, is one of the characteristics of the cathedral that the Viennese find so endearing. This movement is very upbeat and is meant to portray the excitement shared by the Viennese for this beautiful addition to Stephansdom, which was completed in 1433. Stephansdom's north tower is the tallest structure in Vienna, and distinctly stands out within Vienna's skyline.


III. 1945
As World War II was coming to a close in 1945, Stephansdom's roof caught fire from a neighboring building, destroying large portions of the church. One climax occurs at m.30, which depicts Stephansdom's great bell, the Pummerin, crashing down to the ground. This movement depicts the chaotic nature of the raging fire of 1945.


IV. Anton Pilgrim
Anton Pilgrim was the last, and perhaps most beloved, architect who worked on St. Stephen's Cathedral in the Gothic style. One of his most famous projects was the St. Stephen's organ loft, which is depicted by an opening organ-like canon. The final movement to the piece ends in a chorale-like fashion, demonstrating the Viennese's love for Anton Pilgrim, as well as Stephansdom, one of Vienna's most iconic sights.

This work of 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

Partite is a continuous--that is, connected--set of variations on the chorale melody Herzliebster Jesu, was hast do verbrochen translated in some modern hymnals Ah Holy Jesus, how has Thou offended?. The basic form of the work is rather traditional--a theme played by bass trombone preceded by an introduction and followed by a series of variations. A more fundamental aspect, however, is the shape created by a succession of moods: the introduction is questioning, or perhaps questing; the statement of the theme is quiet but troubled; the three variations following become gradually more mocking and sarcastic, but are overcome by the serene and accepting final section, which incorporates one of J.S. Bach's most moving harmonizations of the chorale. Partite was commissioned by the University of Georgia Trombone Choir, Dr. Phillip Jameson, Director. It is dedicated to the memory of Mark A. Lea. The mysterious Prelude and Fugue in B-flat minor BWV 867 is special in that its fugue has five voices, has a leap of a minor 9th, and concludes with a hyperstretto (remember the theory class you slept through), the overlapping of ALL five voices offset by only one note. This seven minute work of genius beautifully arranged by Jim Tranquilla of the iTromboni ensemble is appropriate for advanced performers.

Schubert's delightful lyrical and bouncy Scherzo from Symphony No. 9 (The Great C major) has been arranged for 8-part Trombone Ensemble by Randall Malmstrom. Arguably Schubert's greatest symphonic work, the Great C major is almost an hour in length, bursting with melody from every corner. The well-known Maple Leaf Rag is one of Joplin's early works, written in 1899. It has been recorded by countless artists and has come back into the mainstream after the Ragtime revival of the 1970's.

Joplin lived and performed for a while in Sedalia, Missouri, working at the Maple Leaf Club, from where some believe the work got its name.

The Toccata in e minor comes from the keyboard Partita, BWV 830 first published in 1731. This work is not only grand in length, but also in expression having a very serious tone. The many moods of the work have been beautifully portrayed by Ralph Sauer's elegant transcription. All parts have equal weight in importance in this setting.

Symphonie Fantastique was written in 1830 as one of the first program symphonies in musical history. The Witches' Sabbath is the fifth and final movement tells the story of the author himself amongst a hideous gathering of sorcerers, monsters and witches who have come together for his funeral. The original melody from the first movement is now a vulgar and grotesque dance. Berlioz also combines the Dies irae melody to strike even more fear into the listener.

This arrangement of about 10 minutes in length by Randall Malmstrom is a full transcription of the movement and is appropriate for advanced performers.
