Par BAY WILLIAM. This is a collection of 155 solos for trumpet, cornet, or flugelhorn. Ninety-one were recorded on various trumpets, 37 were recorded on cornet and 27 on flugelhorn. One hundred and fourteen are original compositions and the remaining 41 are arrangements on favorite hymns and sacred songs. A warm-up study is also included. This compilation comprises 6 books; Trumpet Chants; Trumpet Tone Poems, Trumpet Ballads and Waltzes, Trumpet Partitas, Soliloquies for Flugelhorn, Trumpet or Cornet, and Hymns for Unaccompanied Trumpet. Many of the pieces have been revised and new ones have been added. Each book was recorded with a different instrument although Trumpet Ballads and Waltzes and Trumpet Partitas were both recorded with a cornet. However, a different mouthpiece was used for each of those two recordings, thus giving each a slightly different sound. Both the instrument and the mouthpiece used are noted on the title page of each section. Most of the selections are aimed at developing tone and lyricism on the trumpet. However, Trumpet Partitas definitely addresses technical issues. There is a wealth of music in this collection, and it will add much to trumpet practice and performance repertoire. Many years ago, on a suggestion from Marine Band tubist John Cradler, I wrote a quirky collection of tunes set in the lower register of the tuba That book, published in 1991, 'mimics to be popular beyond my wildest dreams with players of all age levels and ability. Its success exposed a void in studies with actual music in the extreme lower part of the tuba range, a part of the instrument that is so important in the music of Prokofiev, Wagner and other composers. The ability to read notes (on sight!) of 4 and 5 ledger lines had only been previously addressed with repetitive exercises and academic method books. The embarrassing gap between that first volume and today's long-awaited and requested second book is only the fault of yours truly, who until recently didn't think there was a sincere desire for a second book. When I did decide to start writing, I was conflicted over which direction to go: Low Vol. 2? Low(er!) Etudes? Higher Lyrical? Orchestral Excerpt-Based Etudes? Duets? I finally decided on this combination of Lou/(er!) Etudes with accompanying duets that give the player a break from the ultra low writing, and provide a chance to revisit the well-loved tunes of the first book with fresh harmonies. These studies have been written to provide the ambitious student with material with which to carry on beyond the point where most methods and study books leave off, after which point the player is either compelled to continue on his own or is left with the idea that, having conquered all of the material at hand, he is well equipped to enter the ranks of professional players. However, these days the demands made upon brass players are beyond anything contained in the older methods, material which, however necessary for the student to conquer during the first years of study, was certainly never intended to develop the player to the point of present-day demands upon his lip, tongue, and breath. The pieces in this book were written as studies, not as musical compositions, that include, in more or less profusion, such figures as the student will be apt to meet with during the course of an active career. The studies are generally tuneful and pleasant in character. This book is not intended for beginners or students who have not already developed a good technique and strong embouchure by their work in the methods such as Arban´s and St. Jacome´s.
