Written by Henri Büsser Andante and Scherzo Op. 44 is a superb composition for Trumpet and Piano. This chamber work was used as an audition piece for the Paris Conservatory and this edition contains the solo scores for B flat and for C Trumpet. Henri Büsser (1872-1913) was a French classical composer and organist. He was a professor at the Paris Conservatoire and a member of the Académie Française. He wrote a ballet numerous operas and chamber music.

Joseph Edouard Barat (1882-1963) is best known for his concertos and compositions for solo wind and orchestra. His sympathy for wind music is thought to have been influenced by his work as a bandmaster with the French Army from which his compositional expertise has derived.    His Andante et Scherzo for Trumpet and Piano begins in a slow common time avoiding clear tonality until it cadences in C major. The second movement is also in C major yet provides contrast by its compound meter and quick pace. Barat's talent is proven when he cleverly combines the two movementsduring the coda.    These musical elements along with many other features create a highly enjoyable performance and is a necessity for any trumpeter's repertoire.

Recitativo Arioso e Scherzo-Fortuna for trumpet and piano came about as a commission by the Belgian trumpeter Manu Mellaerts. The title of the work refers to the goddess Fortuna of Roman mythology who represents fate and fortune. The composition is characterised by its modern but by no means avant-garde tonal language with which composer Jan Hadermann creates a wide variety of musical expression. This together with its playing time of some nine minutes makes Fortuna an ideal examination work for the conservatory-level student.

Trumpet or Cornet & Piano-This new composition for solo trumpet by renowned composerPhilip Sparke explores many aspects of trumpet playing and inparticular its lyrical and technical possibilities. It is a twomovement piece but either movement can be played separatelyif a shorter solo is required. The ‘theme’ of the piece is aweekend in New York with the opening bluesy movement Saturday Serenade describing the city on a Saturday night perhaps in a smoke-filled jazz bar. While composing the secondmovement Sunday Scherzo the composer pictured an earlymorning jog in Central Park. A must for all trumpet players. Thiswork is also available for trumpet and concert band.

Hummel who early in his career became well-known in Vienna as a brilliant pianist studied with Mozart Albrechtsberger Salieri and Haydn and soon earned a high reputation as a composer. His style of composition derived from the classical precepts of his teachers: Mozart's influence is clearly discernible even in his later years. However as time progressed Hummel adopted elements from the emerging romanticism of the day and increasingly turned to a highly figurative style with a level of virtuosity which though appealing in its brilliance often served as an end in itself. Historically his piano music bridges the gap between that of Mozart and Chopin forming a transitionbetween the classical tradition and the fashionable style of the musical salon.The Concerto For Trumpet And Orchestra dates from quite an early period in Hummel's career and was composed in 1803. In its three-movement design its formal layout and its melodic and harmonic workmanship the work still lies fully within the bounds of the classical tradition. This edition for Trumpet and Piano has been arranged by Martin Focke and the Solo Trumpet part which is also included on a separate insert has been edited by Joachim Pliquett.Note that the original key is in E major and that this version has been transposed down a half-tone as to make the piece performable on a B-flat trumpet.

Elgar Howarth’s Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra has been arranged for Trumpet with Piano accompaniment by Martin Harvey. The new Piano reduction cleverly compensates for the extendedpassages of untuned percussion in the original accompaniment adding yet another dimension to this exciting and volatile work. Elgar Howarth (b. 1935) is one of the foremost Brass musicians in Britain today; highlyregarded as a performer conductor composer and teacher. He was born into the northern Brass Band heritage and studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the RNCM). He played the Trumpet at the Royal Opera House andthe Royal Philharmonic Orchestra while also conducting and composing for several Brass Bands most notably the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. He has since written extensively for solo Brass instruments and continues to teach theTrumpet at the Royal Academy of Music.
