Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) est, à tort rappeler, d'abord et avant tout, comme élève de Mozart. En son temps il fut l'un des pianistes les plus respectés et était aussi un compositeur avec un certain influence sur les générations postérieures. On ne sait pas exactement quand il composa son Sonate pour alto. Il a été selfpublished en 1798 à Vienne avec deux sonates pour violon. Easy to play, it still requires some technique of the instrument and some theory knowledge to read in different keys. The book includes the parts for Viola and Piano and for Viola only. The music, quite slow, is really delicate and is supposed to represent a Belgian girl coming from Brussels. She is part of the four faces with: I. The Californian girl, II. The Wisconsonian and IV. The Parisian girl. Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a French modernist composer and a teacher. Hewas also part of Les Six and was strongly influenced by Jazz. Brahms had already announced his ?retirement' from composition when in the spring of 1894 he played chamber music with the cellist Robert Hausmann and the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. This encounter apparently renewed his enthusiasm for Mühlfeld's much admired playing and inspired him to write two clarinet sonatas in the summer of the same year. It remains unclear when exactly Brahms drafted viola parts to his two sonatas. In any case the viola and clarinet versions of the works were first published by Simrock at the same time in 1895. Today there is no doubt about Brahms' authorship of the viola parts. They include important differences from the clarinet original in order to do justice to this string instrument.An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the sonatas' origins, their compositional process, pre-publication performances, their publication history as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors start from the premise that already a few decades after Brahms' death, a widening gulf developed between the composer's expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. On the basis of manifold sources which include memoirs by pupils and chamber music partners, treatises and essays, early instructive editions and historical recordings, the editors deal with key issues in understanding Brahms' notation. Cette oeuvre a été écrite pour remercier la pianiste Tran Ngoc Nguyen Trinh de son investissement hors du commun lors de la création de mon Poème lyrique Kim Vân Kiêu dans sa version pour cinq voix, récitant et piano (création à Paris en décembre 2017).
Le titre porte en lui-même un projet esthétique : comment traduire ce qui est intime, tendre, infime, sensible, l'émotion à fleur de peau , la relation entre les êtres, faite de fragments de mémoire, de convergences et divergences.
Cette musique assez épurée et simple, au caractère léger, si ce n'est gai, est à jouer avec précision et finesse. La forme est constituée de diverses motifs aux caractères très différenciés qui se succèdent rapidement, s'entremêlent et échangent leurs caractéristiques. Les instrumentistes devront veiller à rechercher dans les plus infimes détails, les couleurs sonores, les articulations, les nuances, etc. les plus diversifiées possibles et changer de mode de jeu instantanément dès une nouvelle indication.
Bien que l'oeuvre soit à jouer sans interruption, dans un cadre d'étude, chaque partie peut se jouer seule. The fourth of Four Faces, The Parisian Woman, is an alternative, exciting piece for advanced violists.
