for Viola and Piano-Brahms had already announced his 'retirement' from composition when in the spring of 1894 he played chamber music with the cellist Robert Hausmann and the clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. This encounter apparently renewed his enthusiasm for Mühlfeld?s much admired playing and inspired him to write two Clarinet sonatas in the summer of the same year. It remains unclear when exactly Brahms drafted Viola parts to his two sonatas. In any case the Viola and Clarinet versions of the works were first published by Simrock at the same time in 1895. Today there is no doubt about Brahms? authorship of the Viola parts. They include important differences fromthe Clarinet original in order to do justice to this string instrument.An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the sonatas? origins their compositional process pre-publication performances their publication history as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Clarinet Sonata op. 107-Just as Johannes Brahms had done with his Opus 120 Reger also provided parts for two alternative solo instruments for his Sonata op. 107: 'I will also arrange the clarinet part for viola so that the work can also be played thus'(letter to his publisher). He by no means wanted to leave the arrangement of the viola part to the publisher as slurs had to be changed here and there as well as octave transpositions had to be made - 'only I can do this work!'The viola’s sonorous mid range comes close to that of the clarinet but lends the work its own timbre. Viola players will also value this Urtext edition on account of the practical fingerings and bowing marks.

Carl Bohm's Sarabande has been effectively arranged here for Viola with Piano accompaniment by Alan Arnold. The warm energy of this dance sits well with the Viola which accentuates the passion and character of Bohm’s work.The solo Viola part is also included on a separate insert.

Along with the Stamitz concerto Hoffmeister‘s Viola Concerto is the most important audition piece for Viola players. Yet it has been handed down in a complicated source tradition surviving ina single contemporary manuscript covered with many layers of markings. Our Piano reduction reconstructs for the first time the earliest textual layer in this source thereby coming as close as possible toHoffmeister‘s actual intentions. The reconstructed original is accompanied by a detailed critical commentary. Fingering and bowing marks have been added by no less a musician than Kim Kashkashian!

These four pieces were written separately between 1901 and 1910 for cello and piano. They subsequently appeared in print in different versions, ranging from piano solo to full orchestra. The composer was himself a fine viola player, and, it is hoped, would have welcomed these transcriptions for viola and piano, published here for the first time.

Born in Nottingham England in 1862 Edmund Severn moved to the United States at the age of four along with his family who settled in Hartford Connecticut. Severn began to study the Violin with guidance from his father who taught the instrument professionally. He later studied with Franz Milcke and Bernard Listemann concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra before moving to Berlin to study bowing technique under Emanuel Wirth the first assistant of Joseph Joachim at the Berlin Hochschule. As a composer Edmund Severn wrote mainly orchestral music as well as many pieces for the Violin including a concerto; he also wrote three stringquartets.To this day the Polish Dance for Violin and Piano has remained Severnâ??s most famous work. The piece is arranged here by Alan Arnold for Viola and Piano.

While Gordon Jacobs composed a vast amount of music more than four hundred pieces -- he was particularly celebrated for his work for Viola and for woodwinds as well as for his books on music pedagogy. Jacob had an early success with his Viola Concerto of 1926 which was premiered at a Promenade concert and which was the beginning of a series of strong contributions to Viola repertoire. This Sonatina for Viola and Piano demonstrates his sensitive writing for the instrument. It works very well when performed on clarinet as well.While many composers of the 20th century rejected serialism atonality and other avant garde effects in favour of Romanticism Jacob was much morean adherent to the musical models of the classic and baroque eras while still encompassing modern harmonies. His work Music for a Festival for symphonic wind band and brass ensemble was used for the post-war Festival of Britain and he arranged the British national anthem for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

This charming and humorous set of variations originally for mandolin and keyboard is arranged here for violin and piano by the distinguished performer Steven Isserlis. Originally composed in 1796 when Beethoven was twenty-six it shows the young genius at his most elegant.The work is ideally suited to the violin which has the same tuning as the mandolin. It will make a valuable addition to the repertoire of the more advanced player.
