Melodie was originally written for Violin and Piano in 1878 as the third of the three Memories that made up the composer’s opus 47. It was dedicated to Brailovo the Ukrainian Country estate where it was finished. Since then it has been re-arranged many times most famously for Violin with Orchestra. This arrangement for Viola and Piano by Alan Arnold is part of the popular Viola World series. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 - 1893) is one of the best-known Russian composers in the west. He was the first Russian composer to write in the European style generating criticism from his peers for abandoning the Russian culturalheritage but enjoying acclaim across both Europe and America.

This charming and humorous set of variations originally for mandolin and keyboard is arranged here for violin and piano by the distinguished performer Steven Isserlis. Originally composed in 1796 when Beethoven was twenty-six it shows the young genius at his most elegant.The work is ideally suited to the violin which has the same tuning as the mandolin. It will make a valuable addition to the repertoire of the more advanced player.

Many of the occasional pieces Bridge wrote in the early part of his career were published in versions for violin and piano or cello and piano. Urtext edition.Following a concert by the 14-year old 'wunderkind' Henry Vieuxtemps in 1834 none other than Robert Schumann said 'WithHenri one can safely close one’s eyes. His playing is like a flower at the same time both fragrant and bright'. Vieuxtemps is nowadays considered to be the foremost exponent of the Franco-Belgian Violin school.The composer was however an excellent Viola player and wrote several compositions for the instrument. Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) composed Adagio for violin and piano in 1905 and dedicated it to the outstanding violinist Imre Waldbauer. In 1910 Kodály made versions of the work for both viola and cello, while Norbert Duka transcribed it for double bass.
