Par BEFFA KAROL. Clin d'?il au recueil de sonnets de mon ami Guillaume Métayer (Caractères, 2017), Libre jeu est en trois mouvements qui peuvent être interprétés indépendamment. En concevant l'ensemble, j'avais présent à l'esprit le type d'écriture caractéristique des pièces de Bach pour instrument à cordes soliste (violon ou violoncelle). Comme j'ai tendance à privilégier l'harmonie en musique, j'ai adopté une écriture qui, à partir d'un instrument essentiellement monodique, soit à même de donner une sensation d'harmonie et de polyphonie. C'est pourquoi j'ai voulu dessiner une ligne mélodique qui, par ses inflexions, puisse suggérer la superposition des voix. À cet effet, j'ai multiplié les effets de doubles, triples, et parfois quadruples cordes, dont certaines à vide, pour souligner, comme au fusain, telle partie de la mélodie, telle expression. Quant au mouvement central, ses thèmes s'inspirent d'une idée que j'avais eue à l'âge de quatorze ans - une reprise « d'après de vieux cahiers », selon la jolie formule de Prokofiev.
