George Frideric Handel is considered England's first and foremost composer of oratorios. Above all, the Messiah is regarded as the epitome of sacred music and in German-speaking countries it is also one of the most often performed works in the genre. The version of the Messiah which is most often performed today is a combination of various versions. Consequently, the present critical edition by Ton Koopman contains all the surviving alternative versions of the solo movements. A concordance makes it possible to assign these movements to those various performances of the work conducted by Handel between the Dublin premiere in 1742 and the London concerts which took place up to 1759. In accordance with the wishes voiced by many choral conductors and singers, the vocal score is available in separate English and German versions. A triptych is a three-part altarpiece. In the middle of these fantasies for viola stands a biblical psalm, on the sides each a poem from the 20th century, which refers to psalms. After Georg Trakl's De Profundis, the first fantasy captures the lonely landscape at the beginning of the poem and the yearning voice of the orphan girl. In the second fantasy (after the 23rd Psalm Davids) pastoral-comforting mood frames the heaviness of the Wandering in the dark valley. The third fantasy of Paul Celan's Psalm lets the music emerge from the void, unfolding a melody with discreet allusions to psalmodody and Jewish music, which, despite shadowy clouding, ultimately allows for flowering (above the thorn).

In spring 2020, coronavirus began spreading throughout the world and in many places people were subjected to quarantine. It was then that Hiyoli Togawa, a violist, proposed that the BIS record label release a viola disc entitled Songs of Solitude of short compositions by different contemporary composers, as a sort of reflection of the present time and offering comfort to listeners in their solitude. Hiyoli asked Kalevi Aho (b. 1949) to compose a piece in which she could play and sing simultaneously. The meditative, melancholy Am Horizont is dedicated to Hiyoli Togawa and composed in April 2020.
