Cantata for soloists choir and orchestra-Lobe den Herrn meine Seele (Praise thou the Lord o my spirit) BWV 143Little is known about the genesis of “Lobe den Herrn meine Seele” (Praise thou the Lord o my spirit BWV 143.A transcription from the 19th century was for a long time considered the only source; the musical text of the “New Bach Edition” was based on this material.  Recently however a copy of the score from 1762 has become available.  It offers a more reliable musical text rendering a complete revision of the cantata necessary.On the basis of this new source the work is presented here as part of the“New Bach Edition – Revised” in what is presumably its original form in C major with three trumpets.  This orchestration is more typical of Bach’s writing than the version for three horns in the surviving B-flat major version. This piece for unaccompanied viola solo transforms the gentle arches of Bach's theme into slowly soaring arpeggi of almost unending phrase lengths. Originally written for cello it was premiered by Yo-Yo Ma in Boston in 1997 inmemory of Robert Goldberg. This version for viola is edited by Melia Watras.

BWV 1001-1006 (original Violin solo)-The aim of this edition is to make Bach’s landmark works for solo violin accessible to viola players by presenting a musical text that remains close to the original but also has a distinctly practical focus. Additionally it provides interpretative guidance on Baroque performance practices and how they can be applied to the viola. In this transcription all pieces have been transposed down by a fifth but no further changes were made.
