Just like many other violin virtuosos of the 19th century, Pablo de Sarasate also composed a series of pieces for violin and piano (or orchestra) for his own concert use. Highly virtuosic salon pieces with echoes of national folk music traditions from all over Europe are at the centre. Sarasate published his eight Spanish dances in four books between 1878 and 1882. They alternate between fiery passion and a yearning expressiveness, and are undoubtedly among his most successful compositions. In masterly fashion, Sarasate here mixes up Spanish folk tunes with arrangements of popular compositions of the time. As in the case of the Henle Urtext edition of Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen (HN 573), a violin wizard of our own time is responsible for the fingerings and bowings: Ingolf Turban.

Hungarian composer, pianist and ethnomusicologist Béla Bartók (1881-1945) originally completed the cycle of 85 short piano pieces FOR CHILDREN in 1909. Each piece was based on a folk tune, with the first 42 being Hungarian, and the remaining 43 being Slovakian. Famed Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti (1892-1973) took six of the Hungarian folk tunes and transcribed them for violin and piano. As Bartók later removed and revised some of the songs in the collection, the following numbers included are the original numbers from the 1909 collection: No. 28 - Parlando, No. 18 - Andante con moto, No. 42 - Allegro vivace, No. 33 - Andante sostenuto, No. 6 - Allegro, No. 13 - Andante, No. 38 - Poco vivace. In addition to the original, more difficult violin part he transcribed originally, Szigeti also wrote a simplified version where only the first to fourth positions are used. Both violin versions are included in this edition.

The Violin Sonata No. 1 in E minor, op. 73, a Grand Sonata for Violin and Piano, occupies an important position in Joachim Raff's oeuvre: it reflects numerous artistic, aesthetic, biographical, and reception-historical aspects characteristic of Raff. The work was composed in Weimar in 1854, when Raff was going through a process of artistic self-discovery. He increasingly distanced himself from his mentor Franz Liszt and intensively explored Wagner as well as the ideal of absolute music - this is also reflected in the music of the sonata. While Raff described the first two movements as objectified, he perceived the last two movements as a piece of him, that is, not free of extra-musical influences.The 1st movement, with its expansive main theme, is reminiscent of Mendelssohn; the 2nd movement reveals the refinement of classical-romantic work with musical material. The 3rd movement, with its partly rhythmic, virtuoso accompanying figures and harmonically advanced passages, allows a deeply romantic, almost tormented insight into a soul life a la Sturm und Drang. The material introduced by the piano of the beginning a solo is the one that serves of vertebral axis of the work, that has nearly the form of a rondo. This introduction is based on isolated, naked notes, with a constant rythm of the eighths that create a big intervalic space between them. Later on, that will be used as a support to an espressive melody of the violin, that will take this material and will expose it in pizzicato. In this way will be used as accompaniment to a very suggestive and lyric fragment of the piano that covers nearly all the registers of the instrument. This will lead to a second section of the work, of a very rythmic and intense character of both instruments. The third section, the most expressive of the work, it's iniciated with some chords of the piano that little by litlle dissapear and remembers the introduction. Here, the violin develops a melody of big lirism, supported by the piano witht he material of the introduction, but this time there are non isolated notes but full chords that disintegrate again at the end, taking up again the idea of a fragment of the first section of the piece by means of the piano. Far from free instrumental effects, the work looks mainly for a direct communication with the listener.

Inspired by Béla Bartók's violin sonatas, Ravel planned his own sonata for violin and piano in 1922, but at first did not get beyond sketches. Many interruptions ensued and the work was only finished in 1927. He dedicated it to his violinist friend Hélène Jourdan-Morhange. Regarding the sonata's sparse, thinned out compositional structure and instrumentation, Ravel later emphasized that the sonata proved the tonal incompatibility of the violin and piano. Yet it still succeeded in winning a permanent place in violin repertoire â not least because of its middle movement inspired by jazz elements and the blues. The fingerings in this Henle Urtext edition have been provided by two masters of their instruments: Christian Tetzlaff and Pascal Rogé.

Whereas Nono considered the world to be only fragmentarily analyzable, so-called consumer capitalism increasingly intrudes upon ego structures, by fragmenting them to the point of: assumed insufficiency, i.e., was consumption a form of infiltration?, or: in television you can see models licking face cream because it's so rich etc. (retranslated), as Meredith Haaf cited in her book review (SZ / 23.05.2016 Alexandra Kleeman: You Too Can Have A Body Like Mine) , and to the point of similar perfection-senselessness. Music doesn't do things by halves. Even when events or notes are puffed up, they can retain elegance and significance. Other ego amplitudes are of violinistic nature or are favourite memories - Paganini's Capricci, Stockhausen's Studie I, Steve Reich, the tone C and similar things. The craziest egos are quantums, because at no time are they identical with themselves. They can entangle and superpose, are nonlocal, etc. Although the sound character in this Duo is fairly open, I believe I succeeded in making probability waves of harmonic stopovers perceptible. This means hearing without analyzing and without constantly measuring. Nonlocality - without messenger particles - means no harmonic steps, but with the capacity to interact. (Nicolaus A. Armas Jarnefelt (1869-1958) was a Finnish composer and conductor. Jarnefelt studied in Berlin in 1890-91 with Albert Becker as his teacher. In addition to composing studies, Jarnefelt fully enjoyed the life that a bustling metropolis could offer to a young man - concerts, operas, cafe life etc. Romanze, composed for Geraldine Morgan, was premiered in Helsinki in February 1892. According to critics (notably Bis Wasenius) the work was un-Finnish, perhaps echoing the continental winds Jarnefelt had experienced in Berlin. That aside, Jarnefelt's future brother-in-law, Jean Sibelius, analyzed the Romanze in a letter to his fiancee, Aino, sister of Armas: I think Romanze is a fine technical accomplishment, even the structure works well, given the theme as it is. But Armas certainly can do better than this, he should not waste his efforts in small-scale [salon] music. - Armas will find his own way and will be hailed as the greatest musician of this country..

Johanna Senfter (1879-1961) was a pupil of Max Reger.Beginning with an expressive violin theme in a densely packed, 'Brahms-like' piano setting, the classical four-movement work centres around two capricious and playful movements: Lustig, nicht zu schnell is how the second movement begins, a fugal gem working with all kinds of contrapuntal tricks. This is followed by a scherzo-like, wittily flirting Rasch. The finale begins with a melodically simple tune in an almost folksong-like tone which, by a sequence of character variations, builds to a grand gesture which eventually leads back to the initial cantabile - with the sonata coming to a quiet end. As an educational and recital piece, Bertold Hummel's Sonatina Op. 35, composed in 1969, has accompanied many a young musician following his or her own path. Having sold a thousand times all over the world, it is one of the composer's best-known works and hasbeen included in the repertoire list for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition by the German Music Council. The three movements are characterized by warmth and exciting rhythms: in the powerful Maestoso, the sonority of the main theme is contrasted with a lyrical side theme; the recapitulation ends with an impulsive Fugato. The second movement Elegie consists of a single soulful melody over spherical harmonies of the piano. As a highlight, playful ease, marching rhythms and dramatic intensifications alternate in quick succession in the Finale vivace, followed by wild arpeggios that conclude the piece. Originally composed for violin, versions for viola and violoncello were already commonly used. To mark its 50th birthday, Simrock / Boosey & Hawkes present the work in a revised, newly set edition. Written in the 1990s by the composer himself and now available forthe first time, the versions for alto and tenor saxophone are valuable additions to the repertoire for beginning instrumentalists.

One is flamboyant and rhetorical, the other gentle and lyrical. The first develops rhythmically, through a toccata to a vigorous dance, the second becomes increasingly decorated so that the line is almost dissolved, but finally emerges in its clearest, simplest form. In a coda each musical character disappears into silence.
