Other Finnish works for violin contains twelve pieces for violin and piano. Though brief in duration, most of them were written for concert use, being rich and expressive and, in some cases, technically quite demanding. Others are delightful salon pieces. This volume was compiled by violinist Mirka Malmi and edited by her with pianist Tiina Karakorpi. Many of the women of Finnish origin who wrote music in the 19th and early 20th century were cosmopolitan by nature. They studied and found employment in the cultural metropolises of central Europe. Because of their gender, they generally had no opportunities for employment in national cultural institutions in Finland. Their music was mainly published outside Finland, and in most cases they enjoyed a broad network of connections, an expansive cultural sphere and a successful career.

English comments: Concertino for violin and string orchestra was composed in 1993. It is a pleasant score with a slightly virtuosic touch written with the idea of creating a relaxed atmosphere in which the soloist and the orchestra can display their technique and expressive capabilities. It is a work, similar in lenght to baroque concertos, and is divided into three movements, folowing the conventional form.: two fast movements around a slow one. Te first two movements -Allegro burlesco and Adagio cantabile- follow the ABA pattern. The third starts with a -cadenza- by the soloist which includes thematic material from the previous slow movement linking straight up to the -Presto- which uses as its main idea a more forceful version of the opening melodic sketch of the -Allegro burlesco- converted into three time. The work was specially creatied for the violinist Gerard Claret and the Orquestra de Cambra Nacional d'Andorra. For violin and piano This is a reworking of material from Berkeley's 1979 Violin Sonata, and is an evocative and atmospheric single movement. Veilleuse means 'Night Watch' or 'Night Lantern', and the music has a slightly melancholy, restless atmosphere, which momentarily erupts in a passionate outburst before settling back to the quietly ticking, veiled lines of the opening.

I wrote the first movement of my Sommersonate in the summer of 2010, and though a self-contained work, it called out for continuation or a companion piece. I imagine the first movement, marked moderato, to be bright, free, weightless, transparent, flooded in sunlight. Julvers, a poem written by Pekka Suhonen at the Villa Lante in Rome on Christmas Eve 1992, inspired Kai Nieminen to compose a piece of the same name describing the city's myriad lights as seen from the windows of the Villa high on its hill. As the trees tossed in the wind, they set countless lights twinkling here and there. These moods and reflections give the work an electric charge. For violin and piano The composer writes: The structure is a short set of double variations, the two themes following a short introduction. One is flamboyant and rhetorical, the other gentle and lyrical. The first develops rhythmically, through a toccata to a vigorous dance, the second becomes increasingly decorated so that the line is almost dissolved, but finally emerges in its clearest, simplest form. In a coda each musical character disappears into silence.
