Commissioned by Kennesaw State University Symphony Orchestra in 2012, Chinese Rap for violin and orchestra is premiered by Prof. Helen Kim as the soloist and the KSUSO led by Prof. Michael Alexander at Bailey Center in KSU, GA on Feb. 17, 2014. The work is inspired by Chinese folk musical story telling, Quyi, in a form of mixed reciting and singing style, with interludes played by percussion and plucking instruments in accompaniment. The folk musical story telling is sung in dialects from different geographic regions. I mixed all these elements in a complex three-part form, with an introduction, a cadenza in the middle, and a coda as the frame in the structure. The melodies are delicate and leisurely, and the rhythmic parts are energetic, vivid and lively. Andras Szollosy (1921-2007) was one of the most significant Hungarian composers of the second half of the 20th century, yet his oeuvre has not become as well-known as that of Gyorgy Ligeti, two years his junior, or of Gyorgy Kurtag, five years his junior. Szollosy did not compose many works and he was strict about which of them he would allow to go public. As a younger colleague of his once remarked: He only composed his good works. Szollosy's Sonata for Solo Violin, which was written at the age of 26 and was publicly performed only in 2006, almost 60 years after its composition, fell victim to his self-criticism. Although the model of Bartok's Sonata for Solo Violin of just three years earlier was obviously on the young composer's mind, he was no epigone of the great master. From the aspect of both composition and instrumental technique, the 11-minute Sonata for Solo Violin represents exacting and prominent music, and is a remarkable piece among works written for the violin in 20th-century Hungarian music. The score of the posthumously published work was edited by the soloist of its world premiere, Michael Barta.

Premiere Slovak Radio Orchestra, June 30, 1992, Bratislava, Slovakia, Robert Black, conductor; Lydia Forbes, violin. Henry V is an overture, but with a violin protagonist. This is a concerto, but the density of interaction between soloist and orchestra is far more intense than in any previous work, whether classical or modern. Its form is somewhat analogous to sonata, but it middle sectionbreaks away completely from what has come before into an exhilarating 5-8 ostinato. There is a joy in dissonance here, an embracing of pain, and all the sorrow of existence, as part a Gita-like vision of the horrible, terrifying beauty of men throwing themselves into the slaughter, straining their utmost in a joyous ‘dance’of mud and death. As such, the energy of the piece is compact, and onfirst listen, potentially overwhelming. Metaphors of the individual coming out of a society, being influenced by and then interacting with that society, and then finally leading it are strongly evoked by this work in a non-specific, archetypal way. Winner of Marin Symphony (CA) Composers Symposium Competition (1993).
