Les trois grands duos pour violon et piano de Schubert comptent parmi ses ?uvres les plus significatives. Dans la sonate en La majeur D 574 datant de l?été 1817 il s?attache à dévelop-per l?interaction des deux instruments encore relativement simple dans les sonatines pour vio-lon écrites précédemment (voir HN 6). Il y parvient avec une très grande maîtrise. Dans le rondo en si mineur D 895 composé fin 1826 cette interaction confine à la virtuosité. La cri-tique contemporaine louait déjà «l?audace du maître dans l?harmonie» et la «fantaisie fou-gueuse» de la pièce. Dans la fantaisie en Ut majeur D 934 écrite un an plus tard Schubert encadre un Andantino constitué de variationssur le lied D 741 «Sei mir gegrüßt» par des passages thématiquement savamment imbriqués avec le thème du lied.

Pavana – Capricho is one of the last pieces from Isaac Albeniz’s early period before he turned to Spanish influences – a style that would characterise the rest of his compositions. In this earlier period Albeniz who was a child prodigy on the Piano composed ‘salon style’ music and experimented with traditional styles in the manner of Rameau Bach Beethoven Chopin and Liszt. His shift towards Spanish music occurred after meeting the teacher and composer Felipe Pedrell a leading figure in the development of nationalist Spanish music.Pavana-Capricho is graceful andlight-hearted at the same time. The playfulness that arises from the alternating moods is best achieved when the proper technique and articulation is applied. Arranged for Violin and Piano and with a performance time of ca. 3:30 this piece of Romantic chamber-music is a perfect addition to any concert programme.

La première Sonate pour violon en Sol majeur de Brahms est également connue sous le surnom allemand de Regenliedsonate («Sonate du chant de la pluie»), puisqu?elle cite dans son Finale des motifs mélodiques issus de deux des lieder du compositeur: Regenlied («Chant de la Pluie») et Nachklang («Écho», qui a également la pluie pour thématique). Le motif pointé initial du Finale parcourt déjà les deux premiers mouvements, contribuant ainsi à la cohérence interne de cette ?uvre merveilleusement expressive et élégiaque. Achevée en 1879, cette sonate fut accueillie avec enthousiasme par ses contemporains - Elisabeth von Herzogenberg, liée à Brahms par une profonde amitié, affirma qu?on devait «l?aimer, comme peu de choses en ce monde». Georgian violinist Lisa Batiashvili has chosen five songs in arrangements by Ronald Kornfeil to enhance her own and others? concert repertoire. She offers a selection from ?Aus der Jugendzeit? ?Fahrenden Gesellen? and ?Des Knaben Wunderhorn? including the gorgeous ?Urlicht?. The full-throated piano accompaniments of these originally orchestral songs will not only do the songs justice but also remind us of their use in Mahler?s symphonies where of course the solo violin often featured. With no huge technicaldemands these arrangements can be tackled even by intermediate players and will offer students a rewarding exercise in powerful yet lyrical playing.
