Par IGUDESMAN ALEKSEY. Aleksey Igudesman might reasonably be described as a modern day Victor Borge. With his cabaret partner, Hyung-ki Joo, he has toured concert halls all over the world, wringing all that is humorous out of classical music with just the basic tools of violin and piano. The “Happy Birthday Variations” for violin and piano are dedicated to his good friend, the late Sir Roger Moore and are typical of Igudesman’s brand of humour. They take the internationally known musical greeting on a world-wide tour, from a Viennese Waltz, through a Big Band number, a Bulgarian Vivace in 7/8, a Russian Presto, a Tango and an Alpine Air to conclude in a Paganini-esque finale that’s not quite as difficult as it looks. A great concert showpiece for intermediate students, not least if someone in the audience is celebrating a special day! The first signs of a revival in Italian music at the beginning of the twentieth century are mostly found in the important contributions of a generation of musicians all born in and around the year 1880: Ottorino Respighi Ildebrando Pizzetti Gian Francesco Malipiero and Alfredo Casella.Thanks to them the music scene in Italy began to widen its horizons which basically meant going beyond the 'exclusive cultivation of melodramatic opera and encouraging an awareness of symphonic music in the country.' Pavana – Capricho is one of the last pieces from Isaac Albeniz’s early period before he turned to Spanish influences – a style that would characterise the rest of his compositions. In this earlier period Albeniz who was a child prodigy on the Piano composed ‘salon style’ music and experimented with traditional styles in the manner of Rameau Bach Beethoven Chopin and Liszt. His shift towards Spanish music occurred after meeting the teacher and composer Felipe Pedrell a leading figure in the development of nationalist Spanish music.Pavana-Capricho is graceful andlight-hearted at the same time. The playfulness that arises from the alternating moods is best achieved when the proper technique and articulation is applied. Viennese music has become almost synonymous with Johann Strauss II and his great waltzes. But of course there were other luminaries: his father Johann Strauss I his talented brothers Josef and Eduard as well as their colleagues friends and rivals. Lili Boulanger was the sister of the famous teacher Nadia Boulanger who taught Aaron Copland Elliott Carter and Philip Glass amongst others. She was a composer for the last 10 years of her tragically short life - she died at 25 - and her music stands in the main line of French music exemplified by Faure somewhat tinged with the influence of Debussy's Impressionism. It is generally beautiful delicately coloured and touching. These challenging 'Two Pieces for Violin and Piano' exemplify these qualities. The Nocturne begins sparsely with bare octave figures wound about with a theme built from a repetitive rise-and-fall figure. As the texture become thickerthe violin becomes more virtuosic and begins to climb. There is no harmonic resolution until the final ppp note in the top register which is answered by an low octave from the piano. The Cortege is more lively without being fast. Shifting rhythmic accents tricky runs and contrasting dynamics make this an exciting piece.

10 Easy Pieces. Par IGUDESMAN ALEKSEY. 'In the Zoo 2” is a further collection of intermediate pieces for violin and piano by Aleksey Igudesman, depicting many of a child's favourite animals. Spanning from UK Grade 2 to 4, they will inspire young violinists to interpret the sounds and actions of the animals as notated by the composer and help them understand how abstract music can depict something very real. But what makes these compositions ingenious as teaching pieces is that, hidden within, are very useful technical studies. For example, in 'The Turtle”, steady bowing is needed to make a good tone in the long notes depicting this slow-moving creature. In 'The Crocodile”, short, staccato double stops (easy ones!) depict the snapping jaws and are contrasted with legato, sinuous passages as the animal creeps up on its prey!
