The six-part suite Six Cocktails by French composer Pascal Proust offers something for every taste: some familiar flavours from closer to home mingle with those from lands afar. In additionâ??as per standard in the Music Box seriesâ??all four parts are flexible and can be combined with each other and supplemented by percussion instruments as required ensuring the perfect mix in a convivial atmosphere: shaken or stirred!

Standard US Set (without european suppl. parts)-Commissioned by the Michigan State University Alumni Band this three movement work by Karel Husa was the winner of the first Louis Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1983. A note from thecomposer: 'Divided into three movements this work is a display of virtuoso passages given to solo instruments as well as to the groups of the ensemble. In the Fanfare of the first movement the Brass section concertises in groupsof four Brass quintets (2 Trumpets Horn Trombone and Tuba or Baritone) spread from left to right in back. The Saxophones (SATB) are placed in front of the Brass quintets and the Woodwinds occupy the front of the stage withPercussion on the left and right side. These groups like the Brass quintets play in the concertante style particularly in the first and last movements. 'At the same time each movement contains individual solo passages(for example Timpani and Flute in Movement I - Drum Ceremony and English Horn and other low Woodwinds in Movement II - Elegy). The composition of this piece was prompted by the excellence of Wind and Percussion players today andby the incredible growth of Wind ensembles orchestras and bands in the last 25 years. It is intended for their enjoyment.'

Smith based on Dante Alighieri's literary classic The Divine Comedy , The Ascension is a sizzling musical experience with bravura wind parts and dazzling percussion that is charismatic in its boldness. It's indicative of a highly creative period for this young American composer.

The traditional Ukranian Bell Carol has been expertly scored in a multi-cultural setting for young band and percussion by veteran arranger Robert W. Smith. The arrangement begins quietly with percussion disguising the familiar melodic material. A series of musical evolutions builds to an impressive conclusion. This selection is sure to be a holiday treat for years to come.

In each of the past two years, Robert W. Smith has released a movement from his symphony The Divine Comedy. Musicians, conductors and audiences can now welcome Paradiso, the third movement from the symphony. Ethereal percussion is the palate with which solo voices paint musical landscapes of what paradise must be. Hints of themes from the other movements emerge to tie together all of the musical elements of this powerful new work. Completely captivating! Subtitled Strive for the Highest, this uplifting work was commissioned by the Southeast District of Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma. Danceries Set II arranged for brass band was first commission by Keith Allen for the Birmingham Symphonic Winds. This second set of Danceries continues the format established in the popular Danceries (Set I) of using tunes and dances from Playford s Dancing Master (17th century) to form the basis of an extended dancesuite. In this set the melodies have become more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms. As before each movement is self-contained colourful and direct with its own distinct mood.The outer movements Jennie s Bawbee and Peascod s Galliarda share driving percussion with a military air. Tom Tinker s Toye and Heart s Ease(movements two and three) are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set with a freer use and approach to the material; melodies now occur in various keys and are supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. The result is a richer even more exhilarating set of dances.Brass Band Grade 5
