Commissioned in 1994 by the Royal Air Force 'Scramble!' is a concert overture for symphonic wind band inspired by images of the RAF's airfields during the Battle of Britain immortalised for ever in such films as 'Reach for the Sky'. The pastoral opening depicts the lull before the storm: the young pilots sitting in wicker chairs outside their barracks on a sunlit morning. The peace is of course deceptive suddenly amid siren sounds there is a shout of 'Scramble!' and a rush to the waiting planes. In no time at all the squadron is airborne heading for a skirmish over the English Channel and beyond. A lyrical central section featuring a solo cornet depicts the stillness manypilots described as they flew to engage the enemy before the battle breaks out once more. For those who returned it would be only a short while before once again they would hear the familiar shout of 'Scramble!'

This seven-minute concert overture recalls the early days of the railways and one of the most famous engines of all time ‘The Rocket’. It was commissioned by the Director of the North Hertfordshire Wind Band Phillip Ellis who is the great-great-great-grandson of Stephenson and depicts the Victorian carnival atmosphere on the day of the engine’s inauguration. An ideal work for a good school youth or county level band.

The TV Detectives brings together five of Nigel Hess’s best-known television themes (Dangerfield Campion Wycliffe Maigret and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates) all originally written for small-screen sleuths in whodunits that have been enjoyed by TV audiences worldwide. Dangerfield is a BBC series about a Warwickshire police surgeon and originally starred Nigel le Vaillant before Nigel Havers took over the lead role. Campion also from the BBC was based on Margery Allingham’s stories of a mild-mannered 1920s gentleman detective played by Peter Davison. Wycliffe was a long-running HTV series set in Cornwall and starred Jack Shepherd as a somewhat dour andlow-key DCI - but of course he always solved the case! Michael Gambon starred in Granada TV’s latest incarnation of the famous French detective Maigret while Patricia Routledge played the OAP sleuth to perfection in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates another popular BBC series. For the first time these popular tunes which conjure up their programmes perfectly have been arranged for wind band in a continuous suite.

Malcolm Arnold's 'Clarinet Concerto No. 2 Op. 115' was dedicated to Benny Goodman and first performed by him as part of the 'Red Rocks Music Festival' with the Denver Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brian Priestman on 17 August 1974. The third movement known affectionately as 'The Pre-Goodman Rag' is an outrageous ragtime parody with a hauntingly wistful middle section. The work has now been made more widely available in this transcription for wind band. This version conmtains full score and parts.

'His present pieces must convince both connoisseurs and others alike of the unbiased opinion that Beethoven will in time become one of the greatest composers in Europe”, thus wrote Joseph Haydn, when informing the Elector in Bonn on the progress of his pupil in 1793. However, the elector replied that he was already familiar with parts of the Parthia op. 103 that had been sent as evidence of the composer's progress. Beethoven had apparently only reworked an earlier composition. Nevertheless we must agree with Haydn: The Parthia and the Rondo WoO 25 that was originally intended as the final movement provide wonderful evidence of Beethoven's great skill. La partie nord-ouest de la région de la Veluwe, et en particulier Oldebroek (Pays-Bas), possède une riche tradition religieuse, dont témoignent les bâtiments monumentaux de l'église. Ils racontent une histoire mouvementée, dans laquelle le pasteur Bähler a joué un rôle particulier. Inspirées par son arrivée comme pasteur en 1870 dans la ville voisine d'Oosterwolde, deux grandes communautés ecclésiastiques ont vu le jour, avec les bâtiments religieux typiques. Cependant, la région a aussi connu des troubles sociaux importants. Cette composition est une méditation sur la personnalité marquante du pasteur et en particulier sur l'histoire de la protection des anges: Un soir, le pasteur Bähler avait prêché à Oldebroek et marchait le long du sentier de l?église entre les champs pour aller à Oosterwolde. Le temps était sombre et orageux. Certains opposants de Bähler lui avaient tendu une embuscade et voulaient le noyer dans un fossé près du sentier. Lorsqu?ils virent qu?il n?était pas seul, mais en compagnie de deux autres hommes, ils abandonnèrent leur projet. Le lendemain, Bähler rencontra ses adversaires. Ceux-ci regrettaient ce plan qu?ils n?avaient heureusement pas pu mettre à exécution. Lors de cette rencontre, Bähler affirma catégoriquement avoir été seul à marcher sur le sentier de l?église la veille plutôt qu?accompagné par deux autres hommes. On en conclut qu?il avait été protégé par des anges. Si le Psaume 34 est au centre de cette composition, c?est en raison de sa puissante mélodie mais aussi parce que le texte du verset 4 de la version rimée de ce psaume s'accorde bien avec la légende extraordinaire du pasteur Bähler: ?L'ange du Seigneur monte la garde ?autour de ceux qui le craignent,?il les met hors de danger.? Une deuxième cellule mélodique et harmonique est la transformation musicale du nom ?Bähler?. Cette cellule est utilisée en variation d?accords de tierces majeures et mineures, tant comme idée principale que comme apothéose, mais également comme cellule d'accompagnement ou de motif de pont entre d'autres constructions mélodiques et rythmiques.
