Par RAMEAU JEAN-PHILIPPE. Richer than ever – Rameau’s “Zoroastre” in the version of 1756. Opera in five acts. Rameau’s revised version of his opera “Zoroastre”, which could be heard and seen between 20 January 1756 and 26 March 1757 at the Académie royale de musique, was favourably received. Also from today’s point of view the work profits dramaturgically from many of the changes and seems altogether richer and more tightly woven than the original of 1749. The subject matter of the libretto, derived from Ancient Persian sources, is timeless: the struggle between good and bad. The good is embodied by the religious reformer Zoroastre, a representative of the supreme light being Orosmade. He is opposed by the ambitious magician Abramane who serves Ariman, the spirit of the dark. The opera includes some of Rameau’s most ecstatic and spiritual musical numbers, such as the episode of sun worship in Act 3 with the sublime „Hymne à la Lumière“, which, for unknown reasons, was not integrated in the revision of 1756. It is therefore included in Appendix 3 of this Bärenreiter edition. Incidentally, with “Zoroastre” the prologue, wh ich had been customary since the beginnings of French opera in the 1670s, was abandoned. Instead Rameau was the first to introduce an overture which set the scene for the entire drama and thereby anticipated Gluck’s opera reform by many years. The first performance of George Frideric Handel’s oratorio “Messiah” on 13 April 1742 in Dublin aroused unqualified rapture. A newspaper report a few days later declared that it combined “the Sublime, the Grand, and the Tender”. Its success has remained undiminished ever since, and the “Messiah” has taken its place in musical life. In 2009, to mark the 250th anniversary of Handel’s death, the British Library and Bärenreiter joined forces and made the autograph score of the “Messiah” available to the public in a meticulously reproduced, lavishly published facsimile. The renowned Handel scholar Donald Burrows introduces the characteristics of Handel’smanuscript, describes the history of the work’s composition, and explains the differences between later versions of the “Messiah”, as reflected in the conducting scores. A two-page sketch from the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge completes the publication. Handel's three-part serenata Parnasso in festa was premiered in March 1734 for the wedding of Princess Anne and Prince William IV of Orange. The music is largely based on the English oratorio Athalia. The Italian libretto, by Giacomo Rossi, takes up the Greek myth of the wedding of Thetis and Peleus. As so often in Handel's case, the work was subjected to three large-scale revisions by 1741. This vocal score is based on the Urtext from the Halle Handel Edition (BA 10718), the first to offer a scholarly-critical musical text for the complete serenata. In response to a continued interest in a scholarly facsimile of the Mass in B minor, a new cloth-bound facsimile edition (BVK 2194) has now been published. This replaces the original BÄRENREITER FACSIMILE edition (BVK 1911).

Johann Sebastian Bach completed the Mass in B minor in 1748/49 shortly after the Art of Fugue and shortly before his death. This late work is as concentrated and rich in compositional technique as scarcely any other work. As early as 1818, Hans-Georg Nägeli enthusiastically described the Mass as the greatest musical artwork of all time and all nations?. Since then it has been ranked as an icon of music history.

One of the primary functions of a facsimile is the preservation of such a cultural heritage, particularly when the manuscript (as is the case with the Mass in B minor) is endangered and damaged by iron gall ink erosion. Furthermore, it is moving for Bach admirers to see how in some passages Bach?s handwriting reflects the effort which this last work demanded of him.

The facsimile documents and records the present condition of the complete autograph score. Older reproductions have substituted a few individual folios where the content has become difficult to read in recent years.
The renowned Bach scholar Christoph Wolff describes the work?s significance in his introduction, gives an overview of the history of composition and draws attention to particular distinguishing features of the manuscript.

Once, Bach came up against the boundaries of his art, on blotchy, 260-year-old paper. ?Et expecto?? is this point in the B minor mass, ?And I look for the resurrection of the dead.? Bach wrote modulations which were extraordinary. He had to strive for these. He crossed out ? although this is a fair copy ? hatched and scratched until the paper tore. He was already an old man, his script leans to the left. The handwriting here isn?t nearly as lively as in the ?Cum sancto Spirito?, written earlier. Everywhere, one is moved by the closeness to the manuscript which the facsimile conveys ? one of the most sumptuous ever published.

Following the recent publication of the full score and performance material to Debussy’s “La Mer” (BA 7880), Bärenreiter now presents the study score edition of this “impressionistic” masterpiece. The new scholarly-critical edition draws on several important sources previously unavailable to musicologists, resulting in an array of new readings and corrections. In addition, there are many changes, especially in terms of articulation and dynamics. This new edition includes the famous “fanfare” in Movement III, clearly marked in small print and brackets. This fanfare was excised in the 1910 reissue of the work, but was reinstated by a number of great conductors who knew Debussy, i.e. Monteux, Münch, Mitropoulos and Ansermet. They felt that the excision was a misunderstanding and that the fanfare was necessary for the structure of the movement.
