The Okefenokee Swamp is slated as one of the seven natural wonders of Georgia. The name has two different meanings: first being bubbling waters, and the second meaning Land of Trembling Earth, so named because the peat bog (land) moves when you walk on it, because it is actually floating on water. Although the Oconi are the earliest known inhabitants, this piece is written to honor the Chehaw Indians who gave the swamp its name. The beginning of the piece depicts the grandeur of the over 438,000 acre swamp (one of the five largest swamps in the world). The middle section has a flute solo that depicts the primitive life of the early inhabitants. For a more authentic portrayal, the use of a recorder, especially an alto recorder should be used. Flute Choir/Ensemble Piccolo, optional G treble, 4 flutes, Alto Flute, Bass Flute. This is a full and unabridged arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Overture to The Nutcracker Ballet Suite. Bubbling with attractive tunes which pass between all parts, flute 1 needs agile players who can cope with fast tonguing while the lower parts become simpler. The alto flute part is a particular challenge as it frequently echoes the semiquavers of the upper parts, whilst the bass flute part ventures into the third octave giving the whole score the lightness of the original. A great way to open a flute choir concert.

Lauri Mäntysaari explores the theme nature in Chats before Sunrise (2007, rev. 2022). The atmosphere created in this composition is one of early dawn after a long night spent with good friends (and wine, perhaps), a moment where an unseen element lighter than the air seems to hold the still bubbling conversation in its arms and let us feel relieved. Not only does the word chat mean a light conversation, but also a family of birds which is particularly known for their habit of making clicking sounds. These chats also find their place in the composition.

His output consists of orchestral works, music for instrumental ensemble, solo works, songs and choir music. His works have been performed widely in Finland, but also in eg. ‘Spirit of Independence’ was commissioned by the Koninklijke Fanfare ‘Onafhankelijkheid’ (‘Independence’) from Wiekevorst (Belgium) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. The piece depicts an enthusiastic amateur music club, practicing and making music together in an attentive and companionable atmosphere. The conductor has the good habit of trying to improve the sound of the fanfare by means of practicing chorales and hymns. Jan Van der Roost has used these facts in the dynamic concert piece ‘Spirit of Independence’: a chorale-like middle section is surrounded by music bubbling full of energy.
