Edward Elgar originally composed this work in 1887, as a Pie Jesu, when he was an organist in the St George’s Church in Worcester. Years later, in 1902, he transformed the Pie Jesu into an Ave Verum for soprano and tenor solo, mixed choir and organ. This excellent arrangement by Robert van Beringen skilfully retains the wonderful atmosphere of the original composition.

Oorspronkelijk componeerde Edward Elgar (1857-1934) dit werk in 1887 als een Pie Jesu, toen hij organist was in de St. George’s Church in Worcester. Hij schreef het ter nagedachtenis aan de advocaat William Allen, voor wiehij had gewerkt toen hij vijftien jaar oud was. Het Pie Jesu vormde het eerste deel van opus 2 (de andere twee delen waren het Ave Maria en het Ave Maris Stella). Een aantal jaren later, in 1902, transformeerdehij het Pie Jesu tot een Ave Verum voor sopraan- en tenorsolo, gemengd koor en orgel.Deze uitstekende bewerking is van de hand van Robert van Beringen, die de sfeer van de compositie op vakkundige wijze intact heeftgelaten.

This is the best of me, wrote Edward Elgar after the final measure of his Dream of Gerontius. Premiered in 1900, in Great Britain the work has long been a standard work in the repertoire of large oratorio choirs. This is the ninth and most often performed work of Sir Edward Elgar's famous Enigma Variations of 1899. It pays tribute to his close friend, A.J. Jaeger, whose surname in German means hunter (according to the Bible, Noah's great grandson, Nimrod, was a gifted hunter).
