Michael Costello has a proven track record with festive arrangements of beloved tunes. This setting of LAUDA ANIMA is no exception. An extended introduction (with instructions for cuts) is followed by four stanzas with short interludes between stanzas 2-3 and 3-4. Verse three (Alleluia cannot always be our song) is set for SATB a cappella voices. The final verse is unison with descant, ending with a fanfare reminiscent of the introduction and a four part Alleluia, Amen!  The text is a translation from the Latin by John M. Neale (1861). Can be used as a congregation hymn or as choir anthem.

Het Paasfeest is zowel in de Oosterse als in de Westerse kerk het grootste feest van het liturgische jaar. De oorsprong van het christelijke Paasfeest ligt in de joodse traditie. Het joodse Pesach is nauw verbonden met de uittochtuit Egypte, de Exodus. Met de christelijke viering wordt eveneens een uittocht herdacht, zij het metaforisch. Jezus Christus liet zichzelf als een paaslam offeren. Tijdens het Paasfeest wordt zijn opstanding uit de dood gevierd.De seculiere paasviering komt onder andere tot uiting in de paashaas en de paaseieren, een symbool van vruchtbaarheid en nieuw leven. De seculiere viering toont zo de oorsprong van het lentefeest. De Easter Suite is een vierdeligwerk, gebaseerd op diverse paasliederen uit de christelijke traditie. Na de feestelijke ouverture, met daarin motieven van See the Conquering Hero Comes en Easter Hymn volgt een deel dat de overgang van de lijdenstijd naarhet paasfeest symboliseert. Er zijn twee liederen in dit deel verwerkt: Coleshill (gez. 199) en O Filii et Filiae (O filii et fili? Rex c?lestis, Rex glori? Morte surrexit hodie. Alleluia (gez. 207). Het derde deel is een intermezzo.(See the Conquering Hero Comes, het meest beroemde koor uit Händels oratorium Judas Maccabeus). For the most part, this is a straightforward setting of the familiar nettleton hymn tune—the choirs sing some unison, the assembly sings along on some verses, and there is a descant, as well as an a cappella third verse. But the harmonies, particularly on that third verse, are refreshing. And the fanfare for trumpet, with a toccata-like organ accompaniment, provides a fitting beginning and end to the piece.

Shalom Chaverim is an ancient Hebrew (farewell)song, which was originally sung at the end of a celebration or meeting. It was and is mostly sung as a round. Freely translated the words mean “Goodbye, friends, goodbye and see you again!”. The varying moods at a parting have been captured very well by Andreas Schulte in his arrangement ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’. The composer himself says about the song, ‘Although the melody is in a minor key, the overall atmosphere in the song is positive. one wishes each other all the best. Saying goodbye, however, also hurts. When you slow down the pace of the melody and add ‘blue notes’ in the harmonies, this can be sensed immediately.’Schulte refers here to the first variation. The second variation is very intense with possibly even deeper-felt emotions. ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’ ends on a cheerful and positive note, in fast tempo, and with oriental elements in the melody: ‘L'hitra'ot, Shalom’ (See you again, and farewell!).

Shalom Chaverim is een oud hebreeuws (afscheids)lied, dat oorspronkelijk aan het eind van een viering of bijeenkomst gezongen werd. Dit werd en wordt meestal in ‘canon’ gedaan. Vrij vertaald luidt de tekst: ‘Dag makkers, dag, totziens!’. De verschillende stemmingen bij een afscheid zijn bijzonder fraai door Andreas Schulte in zijn ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’ verwerkt. Zelf zegt de componist over het lied: ‘Alhoewel de toonsoort van de melodie in mineuris, is de teneur van het lied positief. je wenst elkaar alle goeds toe. Maar afscheid doet soms pijn. Wanneer je het tempo van de melodie verlaagt en ‘blue-notes’ toevoegt in de samenklanken, is dit direct voelbaar.’ Schultedoelt hiermee op de eerste variatie. De tweede variatie is zeer intens met mogelijk nog diepere gevoelens. Met een hoog tempo en oosterse elementen in de melodie, eindigt Variations on Shalom Chaverim, opgewekt en positief:‘L'hitra'ot, Shalom’ (Tot ziens, het ga je goed!).
