Giovanni Gabrieli was an Italian composer and organist of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. He was born in Venice, where he trained as a musician and composer, initially studying with his uncle, Andrea Gabrieli, who was a prominent musician and composer in the city. Gabrieli eventually succeeded his uncle as the organist and composer at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, where he worked for most of his career. Gabrieli's Sacrae Symphoniae is a collection of sacred instrumental music that was published in Venice in 1597 which includes canzonas, sonatas, and motets, all of which were composed for the unique acoustics of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. Hidden away in Gabrieli's Sacrae Symphoniae of 1597, among forty-five vocal compositions, lie sixteen works that make up one of the first great monuments of instrumental ensemble music; fourteen canzoni and two sonatas that surpass any of their genre at that time, and that were only rarely matched in the following decades, most often by Gabrieli himself. Gabrieli must be credited with many firsts in regard to the development of the canzona and sonata: he was the first to write for more than eight parts, and first to deploy his forces polychorally. He was first to contrast polyphonic and homophonic writing, and duple and triple meter, within the same piece, and was a pioneer in the use of tone colour - and specified instrumentation - for dramatic musical effect. Egon Kenton, in his Life and Works of Giovanni Gabrieli (American Institute of Musicology, 1967) sees as well the seeds of the concerto grosso and the solo concerto in Gabrieli's use of tutti and solo writing and his setting off of soloistic upper parts against frankly accompanimental lower parts. lt would not stretch the point to add that Gabrieli fleshed out his many innovations with musical materials of a high order, and that he handled his materials with consummate skill.

Andrea Gabrieli was a major force in moving the classical music world toward the more modern Venetian school of the Renaissance. Called by Alfred Einstein One of the greatest and most influential masters of the Renaissance period, Gabrieli fully developed the use of choirs of voices and instruments, often in opposition to each other. David has selected three examples from a posthumous 1589 collection, advising that the four-part pieces were originally scored for viols but are here arranged for modern instruments. Giovanni Gabrieli's Se cantano gl'augelli comes from a collection of madrigals entitled Il trionfo di Dori. Each madrigal is scored for six voices and each ends with the text Viva la bella Dori (Long live fair Dori). This late sixteenth-century collection of madrigals enjoyed great success and was the model of the famous English collection of madrigals entitled, The Triumphes of Oriana.
