Leos Janacek almost seventy years old characterised the wind sextet he had just finished as 'a kind of memory of youth' in a letter to Kamila Stösslová. The suite Youth was written in the summer of 1924 prompted by the composer's need to take stock on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Janacek also heard the Parisian ensemble Societe moderne des instruments a vent several times in Salzburg and Brno. He expanded the classic quintet scoring by the addition of a bass clarinet.Janacek referred to an earlier part of his life in this work not only by quoting a theme from March of the Blue Boys but particularly through his general freshness ofexpression astute humour and use of form which adhered to the classical style. The piece was enthusiastically received by both critics and the public and appeared in print as early as 1925 issued by the Prague publisher Hudebni matice.Wind sextet in the classical styleUrtext based on the Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Leos JanacekNew foreword by Jiri Zahradka (Cz/Eng/Ger)

Leos Janacek wrote only two works for cello and piano of which only Pohadka (Fairy Tale) became established in the concert repertoire. Although he completed the work the composer did not want to have it published. The history of the work’s composition is long and complicated. Janacek began writing the work before 1910 however the Pohadka (Fairy Tale) only received its final form after a series of corrections in 1923. The second composition the Presto is incomplete. Only a sketch exists which Janacek did not develop further. The original tempo marking of Allegro was changed by Janacek himself to Presto. The work has beendiscussed under this title in recent Janacek literature. In the supplement of this edition an early version of A Tale is included. The source to this version is a copy owned by Antonin Vana one of the first interpreters of the composition. The early version of A Tale offers a valuable and interesting alternative to today’s known version with its marked differences such as the considerably changed ending of the first movement and the original form of four movements. Urtext from the Janacek Complete Edition All available sources have been taken into consideration A detailed new foreword by Jiri Zahradka (Czech English German) “Again Bärenreiter sets the industry standard for scholarship clarity of type layout and paper qualitiy.”(Strings July 2009)

Moravian Duets a popular composition that was originally intended for home music-making won young Dvorak a scholarship and relieved him of financial worries; after the composition was published by Simrock it also launched Dvorak's international career.Shortly after their publication Leos Janacek arranged six duets from Op. 29 and Op. 32 for four-part mixed choir using Dvorak's Piano accompaniment. Janacek thus extended the choral repertoire by adding six highly rewarding pieces which are included in this edition. The basis for this edition is Janacek's choral score published in 1939 byJosef Plavec. The Piano part Czech text and German translation by Kurt Honolka were taken without any changes from the Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.

One of Leos Janácek’s last chamber music works was written in the autumn ...(+)
One of Leos Janácek’s last chamber music works was written in the autumn of 1926 at the suggestion of the pianist Otakar Hollmann (1894–1967) an invalid from the First World War. Like his contemporary Paul Wittgenstein Hollmann urged composers to write something for Piano left hand; he succeeded in winning over Bohuslav Martinu Erwin Schulhoff and Janácek to do this. Janácek did not want as he put it to compose a “dance for one leg” but finally wrote a four-movement work with associations to military music scored for Piano Flute (Piccolo) two Trumpets three Trombones (preferably valveTrombones because of the fast passages) and a tenor Tuba. The French Horn was allowed by the composer to substitute the Tuba. The Capriccio was premiered by Otakar Hollmann and members of the Czech Philharmonic in Prague on 2 March 1928 in the presence of the enthusiastic composer. The new edition is based on volume E/5 of the “Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Leos Janácek ”. Urtext based on the “Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Leos Janácek”. New foreword ( Cz /Eng/Ger) by the editor Jarmila Procházková. Includes additional part for French Horn.

?The Glagolitic Mass? one of the 20th century masterpieces of sacred music has a very complex genesis and constitutes an intricate editorial challenge. This new critical edition presents two different versions of the work in two separate volumes (B/5-I BA 6862 und B/5-II BA 6863): the ?September 1927? version which the composer completed before the first rehearsals and subsequent premiere in Brno and the version he partly reworked for the first Prague performance in April 1928. This second version was then revised further and published after Janacek?s death by Universal Edition Wien in 1930. Known as the ?final authorised version? it has been newly edited for thispublication which is based on the engraver?s copy of the score prepared by Janacek?s regular copyist Václav Sedlacek. The new Barenreiter edition also contains an informative preface (Cz/Eng/Ger/Fr/Ru) as well as detailed critical commentary. The ?September 1927? version can be seen more as a supplement and appears without text commentary.

The original score of Janacek's The Lord's Prayer a work written for Tenor and Mixed Choir with Piano or Harmonium accompaniment was completed in 1901. Six years later the composer reworked it with Harp and Organ accompaniment. This version contained in Barenreiter's catalogue was first performed as a cantata on 18 November 1906 by the Hlahol Choral Association in Prague. The composer was prompted to write a musical setting to the text by a series of paintings by contemporary Polish artist Josef Mecina-Krzesz who inspired Janacek to create his own interpretation of the prayer with strong social undercurrents. The melody throughout betrays theinfluence of the Moravian folk song with marked accents on the penultimate syllables - as in Lach dialects. The piece incorporates rich polymelodic treatment. In terms of expression the dramatic sequence anticipates the opera Jenufa. The basis for the edition by Bohumir Stedron was the third authorised copy of The Lord's Prayer kept in the Prague Hlahol archive. In contrast with this copy the dynamics phrasing and rhythm were unified and supplied where necessary. The score contains a preface critical commentary and sung text in Czech and German.

Unfinished Mass-Mass E-flat major 'Unfinished Mass'for SATB soloists mixed chorus and organ By reason of its conciseness of style Janacek's Latin Mass from around 1907-1908 gives the impression of being an inspired sketch rather than a finished work. In particular the brevitv of the Agnus Dei is surprising in effect. The work has a number of striking features: its totally individual melodic andrhythmic style resulting from Janacek's well-known approach to word-setting; the use of rests for expressive purposes; the original use of heterophony which here replaces traditional polyphony; and the expressively written instrumental part. A truly worthwhilepiece offering reasonably proficient amateur choirs a good introduction to modern choral repertoire.

For the recently established Moravian Female Teachers' Choral Association he wrote among others settings of three patriotic poems by Frantisek Serafin Prochazka: Golden Lane (Zlata ulicka) The Weeping Fountain (Placici fontana) and Belvedere(Belveder). Vecné evangelium / The Eternal Gospel Cantata for Solo Voices Mixed Chorus and...(+)
Vecné evangelium / The Eternal Gospel Cantata for Solo Voices Mixed Chorus and Orchestra Leoš Janácek’s great oratorio “The Eternal Gospel” for soprano tenor mixed chorus and orchestra is based on a medieval legend in which an angel announces the coming of the Kingdom of Love on Earth to a Cistercian monk Joachim of Flora. Janácek set the text as a dramatic scene with two characters. The chorus unfolds as a contrasting foil to the two main figures until the final climax when the people sing “Alleluia” and receive the message of the brotherhood of all creation. The Eternal Gospel occupies aspecial place in Janácek’s œuvre. The dream-like atmosphere and emotional force of this twenty-minute cantata cast an unusually powerful spell. It originated during a time of turmoil: Janácek wrote it in spring 1914 on the eve of the First World War and the première took place in Prague in February 1917. In 1924 Janácek revised the cantata yet again for a festive performance on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. The vocal score has been prepared by Leoš Faltus one of the two editors of the volume for the Janácek Complete Edition (series B/volume 4). - Urtext Janacek Complete Edition - Full score (BA6860) and vocal score (BA6860-90) available for sale - Performance material (BA6860-72) available for hire

Rhapsodie. Par JANACEK LEOS. The rhapsody for orchestra “Taras Bulba” is the most important and on account of its genesis the most interesting of the three programmatic orchestral works the composer wrote between 1914 and 1920. All three of these works were responses to the contemporary social and political context: “The Fiddler’s Child” was an indictment of the state of society, “Taras Bulba” was a reaction to the international conflict of World War I, while “The Ballad of Blaník” was inspired by the birth of Czechoslovakia.
“Taras Bulba” is now available in the New Conductor Score series. These completely redesigned scores stand out due to their carefully researched critical report and a highly legible, clean notation, all in the trusted Universal Edition quality./ Répertoire / Orchestre
