French pianist, arranger, composer and conductor, Jean Michel Defaye (b. 1932) entered the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of ten years old. His successful compositions and arrangements were mainly for brass, Movement, composed in 1972 for Trombone and Piano, being no exception. With a typical performance lasting about six minutes, Defaye's Movement makes use of chromaticism, luscious melodic phrases, a wide range, large intervals, and complex rhythms, amongst other aspects. Defaye's passion for the Trombone is clear, through his exploitation of the instrument. For all aspiring trombonists wishing to vary and expand their repertoire, Movement by Jean Michel Defaye is essential..

“Composed in 1978 by Henri Dutilleux, Timbres, Space, Movement is a work for Orchestra, also named ?The starry night? after a painting by Van Gogh. It was commisioned by Mstislav Rostropovich for the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington and is dedicated to Charles Münch. This great orchestral work lasts approximately 20 minutes and depicts the content of the painting. It is written for a full orchestra without Violins or Violas. A sketch of the placement of the instruments is given in the book as its disposition differs from a full orchestra: The Cellos placed in a half-circle in front of the conductor. The Cellos represents the space with twirling solos and more stagnant sections while the lack of Violins and Violas is for the quiet and motionless part of the painting. The solo of the Winds and Drums characterizes the clouds and the light of the moon and the stars. It is divided in two parts: 1. Nébuleuse (Nebula) and 2.Constellations, which are divided by a Cello interlude. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers, amongst many others. His work also includes a Piano sonata, two symphonies, the Violin concerto 'L'arbre des songes' (The tree of dreams) and the Cello concerto 'Tout un monde lointain' (A whole distant word).â€.

Coordinate Movement for Pianists explores the art and science of playing piano from a fundamental yet often overlooked perspective: sound is the result of movement. What movements, then, produce the most desirable sounds at the piano? Drawing from experience in the fields of piano instruction, medicine, and Body Mapping, author Lisa Marsh presents a detailed discussion—complete with anatomical drawings and music examples—about the types of movement that contribute to a healthy, fluid, and versatile piano technique. This resource is divided into three parts. In the first, Marsh establishes several foundational concepts, including the relationship between sound and movement, sensory awareness, and the practice of inclusive awareness. This section also introduces the key anatomical structures involved in playing piano. Part II focuses on the development of a piano technique based on relaxed, efficient, and anatomically accurate movements. Technical skills addressed include: tremolos, trills, leaps, scales, navigating black and white keys, octaves, chords, voicing, articulation, pedaling, fingerings, repeated notes, and tone production, among others. The dozens of music examples included in Part II, excerpted from the standard piano literature, offer an opportunity for pianists to practice healthy movements in context. This section also includes several chapters that offer practical tips for practicing, learning, and memorizing music. Part III rounds out this resource with a thoughtful discussion about musicians’ physical, mental, and emotional wellness. Topics covered include finding community and employment, combating performance anxiety, preventing injury, and rehabilitating after injury. Coordinate Movement for Pianists is a brilliant reminder that healthy movement is the basis for a fulfilling and lifelong enjoyment of piano. Regardless of experience or level, students and teachers alike are certain to gain new inspiration and reap the benefits from applying these ideas to their own craft. Lisa Marsh is Director of the Coordinate Movement Program at Portland State University, where she specializes in wellness for musicians. Her work as an educator, performer, and composer is informed by years of experience in the fields of medicine, piano study, Body Mapping, and Alexander Technique.

Suite in Three Movements (2021) for harpsichord was commissioned by Scott Hyslop. The three movements take their inspiration and forms from early models. They combine allusions to common practice harmony with later harmonic and rhythmic elements. The first movement, Concerto, is in a bright, Italianate manner (not without a bit of humor). The animating contrast is between ripieno (ritornello) sections and filigree-driven solo episodes. The second movement, Arioso, is a lyric aria in which the baroque-like principal material is integrated with more varied harmonic excursions. The third movement, Sonata, is a vibrant binary movement in the manner of Domenico Scarlatti.Harpsichord Duration: 13’ Composed: 2021 Published by: Zimbel Press.

...and sundry movements of the heart... for Tuba and Piano. The four movements of this work explore very diverse (sundry) musical territories: abstract and serious, songlike, humorous, pensive and transcendent. Many of the musical ideas were generated in spontaneous improvising sessions or by singing--hence, movements of the heart. Prelude is anchored in its structure by a bold, serious gesture that is heard at the beginning, middle, and end of the movement, developed differently each time. The two intervening episodes are contrasting in tempo, and materials: the first is more abstract, the second a strong, focused melody. Song, the second movement, is a warmly lyrical tune in a straightforward setting. The third movement, Vaudeville, is light-hearted and witty. Standing Stones is titled after numerous sites in the British Isles where ancient people erected huge stones in circles, singly, or even lining broad avenues. The incredible effort required to do so is mind-boggling, given the tools available to the people. And that they were able to make near-perfect circles, with stones aligned by the positions of sun and moon and seasons is further evidence of their intelligence and dedication to ideas and deep feelings far beyond the daily tasks of survival. The music begins very quietly, in deep tones, enigmatic harmonies, and introspective melodies. The music gradually takes on a brighter sound until it reaches an ecstatic climax.

Without a spontaneous forward movement of sound by singers, inspired by breath, musical expression becomes stilted, fake, dishonest, and does little to touch us deeply in ways we cannot explain. — From the Introduction James Jordan’s The Ensemble Movement Warm-Up explores how to organize and sequence movement activities in a choral setting to increase artistry and help raise the performance level of any ensemble, regardless of age. Building on the ideas of Rudolf von Laban and Edwin E. Gordon’s Music Learning Theory, James Jordan creates an exciting new rhythm/movement pedagogy. This volume: Introduces simple movements—stepping and clapping—to help the ensemble explore kinesthetic feeling connected to harmonic rhythm, not meter Teaches fundamental principles of artistic phrasing Revolutionizes ensemble teaching to focus on how sound moves forward, and not on rhythm notation Demonstrates how to teach Laban Efforts in Combination through life experiences Teaches the important distinction between rhythm and tempo, and harmonic rhythm Builds legato and sense of line Introduces the new concept of “projection†to teach and conceptualize phrase shape The Ensemble Movement Warm-Up is the culmination of 40 years of experimentation, thought, and study using the wealth of ideas provided by Laban and is a major contribution to the choral art.  .

Harald Genzmer's composition Divertimento di danza for string orchestra clearly continues the baroque form of the divertimento. This light music * in the truest sense of the word * consisted of a sequence of loose movements with free forms and dance movements alternat-ing in varied succession. The divertimento comprised five to six movements. Genzmer kept to all these facts but he brought new life into the old forms. Though he did not compose in the old style, he respected certain rules of the traditional form. Ouverture * Allegro (Fugato) * Adagio * Presto (on an Old French dance) * Finale (on an English dance movement).
