The song “Gläns Över Sjö Och Strand” is unexpectedly inspired by the pianist Lennart Simonsson. We have been working with good friends on some arrangements and audio mixes. Mikael and Göran have come up with new harmonic colors for the arrangements “Santa Baby” and “Julfemman.” Tony from Take 6 has beautifully mixed Fredrik’s arrangement of “Sleigh Ride.” Ilkka, who works with Finnish colleagues in Rajaton, has spread a light from the east. Now a thousand Christmas lights are lit. Erik and Luca from the Italian Cluster have also lent us their talent and taste in “Let It Snow,” The artist, Hans Lif, was tasked with making cookie cutters for the nice gingerbread cookies on the album cover. There are many composers of whom it is said today that they had gone back in time or had composed against contemporary taste. Today, the question arises, though, as to what of value is to be extracted, rediscovered, or re-edited. Camillo Schumann (1872-1946) is one of these nearly forgotten composers. His works are still largely unknown today. Schumann's tonal language combines the Brahmsian sound scape with the grand late romantic Liszt school. His piano pieces range even to sounds reminiscent of Rachmaninoff and are of tremendous power and virtuosity. The pronounced and inventive melody makes the works the testimony of a composer who has not yet come to the fore. His two sonatas for clarinet and piano have hitherto remained completely unknown. This is astonishing, for they are on the level of the sonatas of Johannes Brahms, who probably contributed the most essentially to this genre. Surfacing as a special treasure from the estate of the Saxon musicologist and collector Harald Schurz were the autographs of both clarinet sonatas, now to be published for the first time. Remember falling in love with the expressive qualities of the Brahms sonatas? You can rekindle that feeling with these works by Camillo Schumann. This imaginative setting of words by John White Chadwick creates a feeling of eternal strength from its constant musical flow. Peter Pindar Stearns is well known for his sensitivity to text and choir alike and this anthem reflects his keen imagination as well. The first verse is set in unison with a lovely soaring melody while the second verse supports the melody in four-part writing. A brief organ interlude ensues before the final verse which is for two part women and men's voices concluding in a spirit of unity.

Peter Pindar Stearns has surpassed even my highest expectations for him with his Eternal Ruler, a tribute to Edwardian and post-Edwardian hymn anthems. Where to begin? Imagine the finest, broadest melody Gustav Holst could write, add the impassioned fervor of Balfour Gardiner's Evening Hymn or Stanford in B-flat, and hold all that together with Stearns's ultimate integrity and infallible taste. Every time I play and sing through this, it leaves me in tears, and I haven't even mentioned the amazing subtlety of Stearns's harmony, the genius of his part writing, and the overwhleming sweep of his lines.
