This celebratory work, which Philip Sparke wrote for the 20th anniversary of the Nottingham Concert Band, starts with a hymn-like theme played as a fanfare in the brass. With a change of mood from ‘solemn’ to ‘merry’ and back to ‘majestic’, together with an unusual orchestration, in which may different instruments feature and in which at points the entire wind orchestra shimmers in tutti passages, A Nottingham Festival is a real pleasure for musicians and public alike.

A Nottingham Festival débute par un motif ascendant qui contraste avec la fougueuse entrée des cuivres. Puis l’ambiance se fait sereine pour introduire une mélodie jouée par les clarinettes et accompagnée d’un motif rythmique la caisse claire. Un crescendo mène un passage puissant repris par l’orchestre entier qui réintroduit la trame initiale. Le tableau final est rehaussé par la reprise majestueuse du thème d’origine, interprété cette fois par les cuivres, où s’entrelacent les attrayantes répliques des bois. Une coda énergique met fin cette somptueuse composition qui souligne la force créatrice du compositeur.

Questo brano festivo è stato composto da Philip Sparke per il 20° anniversario di fondazione della Nottingham Concert Band. Il pezzo apre con un motivo simile a un inno. Cambiamenti di umore, dal festoso al divertito per poi tornare al maestoso, come anche un’orchestrazione bilanciata che riesce a mettere in risalto molti strumenti come anche l’organico nei passaggi in tutti, fanno di A Nottingham Festival un vero piacere musicale per esecutori e pubblico.

The title of this work refers to the Tall Ship Race, in which large sailing ships annually appear at various European destinations. The work consists of a slow introduction, which describes the majestic sailing ships; and a faster section (Vivo), which begins in the style of a sea shanty. Now the ship is under full sail, and we hear a reprise of material from the introduction to bring the piece to a close.

Tijdens de wereldbekende, jaarlijkse ‘Tall Ship Race’ nemen op verschillende plaatsen in Europa grote zeilschepen het tegen elkaar op. Dit event vormt de inspiratiebron van dit werk, dat in het eerste, langzame deel een majestueuze boot beschrijft. Hierna volgt een snel ‚vivo’ gedeelte waarin alle zeilen worden bijgezet waarna een spectaculair slot - gebaseerd op het beginmateriaal éen einde maakt aan deze tocht.

Der Titel des Werkes bezieht sich auf das Tall Ship Race, bei dem sich jährlich große Segelschiffe an verschiedenen Orten in Europa messen. Das Werk besteht aus einer langsamen Einleitung, welche den majestätischen Segler beschreibt, und einem schnelleren Abschnitt (Vivo), der im Stile eines Seemannsliedes beginnt. Im Mittelteil fährt das Schiff_x001F_ schon unter vollen Segeln, bevor Motive aus der Einleitung wieder aufgenommen werden, um das Stück zu beenden.

Le titre de la pièce évoque la Tall Ship Race (La Course des Grands Voiliers) qui se déroule chaque année depuis 1956. Les bateaux qui y participent sont tous de grands voiliers servant la formation des jeunes équipages et couvrent des centaines de miles marins sur les mers d’Europe. L’oeuvre se compose d’une lente introduction qui évoque les bateaux majestueux et une section plus rapide débutant dans le style d’une chanson de marins. Un passage central voit les bateaux toutes voiles dehors, puis les thèmes de la première section reviennent pour clore la composition. Hissez la grand voile !

Il titolo del brano evoca la Tall Ship Race, una gara velistica che si tiene ogni anno in diverse localit in Europa. Il brano si compone di una lenta introduzione che rappresenta la maestosit delle imbarcazioni e che precede una sezione veloce (vivo), scritta nello stile di una canzone di marinai. Un passaggio centrale vede le imbarcazioni allineate prima della partenza, in seguito i temi del primo movimento sono ripresentati e concludono la composizione.

The history of the genesis of the Requiem is entwined with legends and anecdotes. The burdens of the composition and performance of La Clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberflote, and an acute infection led to the collapse and death of the composer following a short illness. Mozart left his wife in considerable debt. Constanze therefore turned to Mozart's friends, asking them to complete the fragment. After two failed attempts, the task passed to Mozart's pupil Franz Xaver Sussmayr, who completed the Requiem in the form known today, using working materials that are no longer extant, and perhaps verbal instructions from the composer. Today the Sussmayr version is still the most well known, and it is doubtless the one with the closest historical ties to Mozart. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app!
