The anonymously-penned 'Tom O'Bedlam' is one of the best known examples of c.17th mad-song poetry. Part saga, part stream-of-consciousness, Tom recounts his descent to madness by virtue of his libidinous lifestyle and speaks of his life begging on the streets of London. The text conveys wit, anger, sexual bravado, fear and boastfulness but each strophe is capped with the shameful, pitiful refrain of Tom's begging call Any food, any feeding?. These contrasting moods lend themselves wonderfully to a musical setting, offering both singer and chamber orchestra the opportunity to express the whole gamut of musical coloring, from the most intimate utterances of Tom's begging call, to his rage all, illustrated richly by the chamber orchestra within which each player plays a 'solo', active part in the storytelling.

The period over which the Mass in F major was written can be followed step by step by virtue of Schubert himself having written dates in the autograph score (Schubert wrote the work with a few interruptions between May and July 1814), and what prompted him to compose it is only too well known - the centenary of the Lichtental parish church -, but the day it was first performed was not clear for quite some time.

The chaotic life of a creative person can seen demanding at times, but creating something beautiful in the form of art makes the headaches and stress worth it at the end of the day. This piece recreates this with the piano bringing in wave upon wave of tension. Tight clusters of notes and alternating asymmetric time signatures create a tumultuous and uncomfortable setting for our flutist to try and create something of beauty...
