PROGRAM NOTES Heartbreak Trail describes the forced relocation of approximately 100,000 Native Americans in the 1830s. Known as the Trail of Tears, thousands lost their lives during the march, and it is remembered today as a great human-rights atrocity and a shameful period in American history. The opening A-section captures the sadness of those in the five tribes who were forced from their homeland. The fast B-section represents the determination to survive the long, difficult trek. Although there were many obstacles, thousands did survive, but a dark A-section returns to depict the loss of homeland, fellow tribe members, and a depression over the new lack of freedom. PERFORMANCE NOTES The opening should be at a moderate pace and section entrances should be balanced at mezzo piano. In m. 12 have the woodwinds play out their melodic material. In m. 20 the brass should pick up the same volume level as did the woodwinds previously. Measure 27 should die away from what was, and then a sudden change in volume, and mood at m. 31. The entire B-section should be bold, with attention paid to the many accents. (Before working the B-section, an explanation of the difference in accents will probably aid in accuracy.) Measures 37 and 41 have the timpanist and tom-tom player play a very strong forte with attention to the accents. Measures 51 to 52 work a strong quick crescendo to fortissimo. This should set up the tutti forte at m. 53. In m. 61 start a gradual diminuendo to the return of the A-section at m. 68. Explain how to execute the staggered breathing for the flutes, tenor sax and trombone starting at m. 73. Although the final percussion from m. 73 to the end is soft and fading, make sure the final sleigh bell sounds are heard clearly. PROGRAM NOTESHeartbreak Trail describes the forced relocation of approximately 100,000 Native Americans in the 1830s. Harmonic Gallery, commissioned by Network for New Music for premiere at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, is a musical analog of a museum exhibition in which paintings, sometimes created hundreds of years apart, are shown in close proximity. There are three movements, surrounded by musical frames. Minuetto is reminiscent of the early nineteenth century when the minuet form started to escape its rigid formalities. Angst recalls the early twentieth century when tonality supposedly started to crumble. It is based on famous harmonies used by Richard Wagner and Arnold Schoenberg. Dance is unashamedly post-minimal and post-modern, and celebrates repetition and cadences. The four frames comment on the harmonies of the movements that they surround.
The three movements are very loosely related to three paintings in the collection: The Gordon Family, by Henry Benbridge, ca. 1762; Final Assault upon Fort Fisher, North Carolina, by Xanthus Smith, ca. 187273; Three Wise Men Greeting Entry into Lagos, by Kehinda Wiley, 2008.

An Ankh is an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic representing the word Life. The Ankh of Eternity depicts an epic journey through ancient lands to find the mythical Ankh of Eternity amulet promising eternal life. The piece journeys through the desert in a caravan, with a stop for a Kaff celebration, an Arabic hand-clapping folk art. The discovery of the tomb is spine chilling and eerie with special percussion effects. After the Ankh is discovered, swarms of locusts descend and our travelers run for their lives. They may have found eternal life, but will they be forever cursed? The Ankh of Eternity uses an Arabic or double harmonic-major scale. Performers have multiple soloing and improvising opportunities. Complex but repeating rhythms offer players a chance to practice getting in the groove. Players and audiences alike will be invigorated by the many celebratory moments and thrilled at the eerie and downright scary moments! The Ankh of Eternity offers cultural and historical inclusion opportunities, improvisation, unique scales, rhythmic challenges, and a thrilling story. Conductor Notes: Measures 45-61: Kaff is the ancient Arabic art of hand clapping over improvised poetry. The Kaff Celebration section represents this art form. The improvising soloists should be designated by the conductor and should each be four measures long . Alternatively, soloists may copy the phrase in the second ending as a solo. The AYE! should be shouted joyously. The repeat may be omitted for performance time concerns, or, of course, repeated multiple times for more solos. Measures 64-73: Experiment with different cymbal noises, such as scrapes with a nail or coin, taps with triangle beaters, bowed cymbals, etc. Water-cymbal techniques should also be used. Fill a storage tub with water, and with the suspended cymbal still on the stand, hit the cymbal a couple times with a soft mallet, and lower the cymbal into the water for a glissando effect. The overall effect should be creepy cave-like echoes bending around corners. An Ankh is an ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic representing the word Life. The Ankh of Eternity depicts an epic journey through ancient lands to find the mythical Ankh of Eternity amulet promising eternal life. This action packed piece has a definite cinematic quality to it, and a title to match! Popular composer Sean O'Loughlin brings a wealth of musical sophistication to this contest/festival choice.Phantom’s Escape draws its title from a ski run at Mammoth mountain near Yosemite National Park in the Sierra Mountains. While skiing there, the name inspired me to create some original music with its roots in modern film scoring. The composition is in a traditional ABA form with contrasting sections. The music is both aggressive and passionate and provides some great teaching elements for the more mature string orchestra. At the beginning of the piece, the pulsing in the low voices sets the stage for the drama to come. I have always loved the pairing of eighth-note triplets and standard eighth notes in the same line. This is evident in the melodic element in the section starting at m. 7. Be sure not to rush the triplets here. A dramatic pulsing figure takes over at m. 21, then begins to deconstruct at m. 25.A mechanical-like rhythmic figure ensues at m. 31 to provide the accompaniment to the main melody in augmentation in the celli. The violas add some imitation to this at m. 39 that leads us to a more lyrical passage at m. 46. This lyricism continues to evolve at m. 51 with a multitude of inner counterpoint lines. The music pulls back at m. 59 to set up the big build-up into m. 73. The combination of eighth notes, eighth-note triplets and sixteenth notes creates some exciting textures leading into the passionate section at m. 73. The opening section returns at m. 86. This builds into the unison gesture at m. 120 to bring the music to a dramatic conclusion.

(T.D. Schlee).

In the dim moonlight on a night long past a rider emerges from the fog and slowly dares to cross a mysterious and unsettling bridge. The trembling rider hesitates, unsure whether he is more nervous about the legend of the headless horseman or the creaking and shifting he feels under his own horse's hooves. Haunted Bridges is a work for string orchestra inspired by Washington Irving's Ichabod Crane and his ill-fated ride in Sleepy Hollow. The piece contains allusions to the tune London Bridge is Falling Down, first as a creeping counter-melody and later as a theme in a twisted 3/4 section whose shifting harmonic progression draws to mind the fall of the fabled bridge. Haunted Bridges contains alternating F/C-sharps and -naturals throughout and devilishly unpredictable harmonic patterns. The piece also calls for numerous extended techniques that students will enjoy, including playing behind the bridge, sul ponticello, portamento, and seagull glissandi. Special techniques: Haunted Bridges calls for a handful of extended techniques, most of which are self explanatory or commonly known. The technique appearing in the Violin II part from measures 58-72 may require some additional explanation. This figure is sometimes referred to as seagull glissando and is achieved by lightly touching the finger to the string and gliding up and down the string, producing many transient natural harmonics as the finger crosses the nodes of the string. It is suggested to start with the 3rd finger on the A string and slowly glissando up beyond the natural A harmonic, then slowly back down, continuing in this pattern until measure 73. It is also intended for each player to vary their speed slightly so that the timing of the glissandi are all a little different, resulting in a shimmering, aleatoric effect. In the dim moonlight on a night long past a rider emerges from the fog and slowly dares to cross a mysterious and unsettling bridge. On November 5th, 2017, a mass shooting took place at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. Twenty-six innocent people lost their lives that day, including an unborn child. Overture to a Small Town is dedicated to these victims and the loved ones they left behind. From the biggest cities to the smallest towns, the senseless bloodshed must end. Despite the darkness of this tragedy, it is my intent through this music to portray a sense of hope, dignity, and innocence deserved by all America's cities and towns. The opening moments of this piece should be treated delicately, ensuring that the brass section moves together in one unified voice, and that the crotales evoke distant flickers of light. Similarly, in mm. 120-127, articulations in the flutes, trumpets and mallets should be strong enough to be heard, but without being aggressive. The textural layering in mm. 48-53 should be executed with machine-like precision of both rhythm and articulation. This passage should evoke the sound of many voices rising together. There should be a great contrast between the opening Piano dynamic and the final Forte dynamic. In mm. 65-69, both mallet percussionists may play the indicated notes in any octave they choose. Both players should move rapidly between notes in any order. This passage should sound fluid and ethereal. In mm. 69-73: If there is no English Horn available to the ensemble, the Trumpet should play this passage solo. If there is an English Horn, both instruments should play the passage together. This impressionistic composition about these vanished structures, although written for more advanced ensembles, has only one flute, clarinet, trumpet, horn and trombone part. As a result, smaller bands can play this composition without having to look for a flex-band arrangement. Use this to develop the essential skills of syncopation and counting while also offering the security of only having one part for each instrument voice. An exciting contrasting selection for bands looking for a harmonically interesting composition, this also works well as a contest selection.  .On November 5th, 2017, a mass shooting took place at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. American Visions is a fast-paced and energetic composition featuring rousing brass fanfares, lively woodwind motives, and driving percussion. It was initially inspired to embody the sense of American vigor and patriotism. Musically, the main motive at mm. 4-12 runs throughout the piece and vacillates between duple and triplet rhythms. Players should be mindful to differentiate between the two rhythms, so there is clarity. Measure 39 represents a contrasting section, and should be thought of as dark and warm sounding as possible. I intended that the section would resemble the overall timbre of orchestral strings, and players could think of that when performing the piece. Measure 55 presents a triplet rhythmic motive that must be precise in timing and dynamics. At m. 66, be sure that the main melodic motive and the tenor saxophone, low brass, and chimes countermelody can be heard through the ensemble's texture. Measure 73 uses bell tone articulations that build to standard articulations at m. 76. PROGRAM NOTES Santa's Majesty is inspired by the promise and grandeur presented by Santa Claus. Many of us place our faith in legendary figures hoping for good to be shared with those around us in our lives. The intention of this work is to capture the majesty surrounding our beloved Saint Nicholas. NOTES TO CONDUCTOR The duration of the composition is two minutes at the marked tempo. Careful attention should be given to articulations, dynamic changes and phrasing throughout the work. The entire work should be felt in two even though it is marked in common time. Be sure not to breathe after any crescendo throughout the work. Measure 73 through measure 75 should give focus to the tenor voices. The last three quarter notes of the piece should be emphasized a little heavier with some space.PROGRAM NOTESSanta’s Majesty is inspired by the promise and grandeur presented by Santa Claus. Aztec Gold is an excellent concert opener for a developing band. Composer Joseph Compello, drawing on his many years of experience as a teacher, is known for writing very intriguing music for younger students. This piece would be a great opportunity for cross-curricular instruction with a school's history department. Aztec Gold is also a perfect selection to highlight a band's strengths in contest or festival performance.Aztec Gold is an excellent concert opener for a moderately advanced band. Measures 1–73 are to be performed in a marcato style with an underlying feel of rhythmic unrest. Beginning at m. 19, the triangle player must be able to execute a damping effect on the second eighth note of beat 2. Young players will require instruction in this technique. The accented sixteenth notes in the timpani part, which first appear in mm. 17-18, should be prominent. They also appear at mm. 89 and 91, and mm. 124 and 126. The contrasting middle section at m. 73 should have the same unsettled rhythmic feel beneath the more flowing lines in the woodwinds. The syncopated accents which appear beginning m. 121 will easily fall into place once young players understand that the accents occur three eighth notes apart.
