The Collaborative Artist Flute Violin Piano-Faber Piano Adventures is proud to present a new chamber music composition Curiouser and Curiouser. This piece was originally written for Violin and Piano and if the 'New World' Symphony and the 'American' String Quartet are the best-known products of Anton n Dvorak's years in the United States the little Sonatina in G major(sometimes called the 'Indian Lament' Sonatina) may well be the most obscure; yet it is a charming work that deserves better than its relegation to the learning books of young violinists. The Sonatina is in four movements:Allegro risoluto Larghetto Scherzo (molto vivace) and Allegro. The first movement's principal tune has a firm rhythmic spine its second tune a gentle plaintiveness; there is just a hint of Americanfolk music in the movement.The following Larghetto earned the Sonatina its nickname. The succession of its three melodies - one in G minor one in B flat major and one in G major - has to it the same wistfulness and thesame sudden brightening and then softening of mood that we hear in the famous slow movement of the 'New World' Symphony.The Scherzo takes the very first gesture of the Allegro risoluto as its starting-point. The finale isa substantial sonata-allegro movement with three wonderful themes: the opening syncopated idea in G major a subsidiary thought in E minor very dancelike and built around a repeating marcato cell and finally a rich tranquillomelody that closes the exposition. This adaptation for Flute and Piano by James Galway conveys all the spirit of the original.

Arranged for Piano and Flute-Cesar Franck’s Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the Violin repertoire a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.After Franck’s death in 1890 the original publisher of the Sonata the Parisian house Julien Hamelle announced an arrangement of the work for Flute in 1910. However it has not been possible to locate any copy of this publication. That the Flute version of Franck’s Sonata has found a permanent place in the chamber musicrepertoire is primarily the achievement of Jean-Pierre Rampal who frequently performed his own arrangement of the work.There were no idiomatic Violin techniques to overcome and the cantabile solo part with its broadly arched melodies seems perfectly natural on a wind instrument. The present Flute arrangement largely adopts the original Violin part unchanged merely transposing those passages that go beneath the Flute’s range. In such cases the change of register begins early enough to avoid disruptions to the melodic line and the musical context. The balance between the solo instrument and the (unaltered) Piano accompaniment remains intact.The edition is rounded off by an informative text on the genesis and reception history of the sonata (Ger/Fr/Eng).

Péter Wolf's collection Wolf-temperiertes Klavier, published in 2018, referring to the series The Well-Tempered Clavier by Bach, contains 24 piano pieces, a major and a minor key composition based on each pitch of the chromatic scale. The ninth piece, an Adagio in E major, is one of the gems in the volume, building on the tradition of the Baroque pastorale. This soaring melody has been arranged by the composer to a duet: above the piano accompaniment, it can be performed by a violin or a flute (either by an oboe or other melodic instrument).

PAUL WETZGER (1870-1937) was a German flutist composer born in Dahme near Lübeck. At a young age he took violin lessons from the local music director later switching to flute. By 15 years of age Wetzger had played his first concert in the main church of Dahmen and was second flutist of the municipal orchestra. He later became solo flutist with the municipal orchestra of Essen and taught at the Essen conservatory. He wrote numerous pieces for flute and several chamber music works also editing works by the French composer/flutist Jules Demersseman. Wetzger's Am Waldesbach (By the Forest Brook) ideally for flute and orchestra or piano was a staple of celebrated flutistMarcel Moyse recorded by him in 1935 on the French Columbia label. Since then it has become a favorite in the flute teaching repertory perhaps most notably included Toshio Takahashi's famous Suzuki Flute Method. This Southern Music edition faithfully captures this classic piece as performed by living legend of the flute Sir James Galway.

Sa virtuosité, toujours au service de la musique, bouleverse entièrement la pratique violonistique en France, créant une véritable école. De 1728, où démarre sa carrière au Concert Spirituel à Paris, jusqu?à son assassina en 1764, il n?aura de cesse d?écrire et de jouer, que ce soit pour son instrument ou dans des ?uvres ambitieuses. Ce concerto pour violon et orchestre op. VII n°5, probablement des années 1737, est en la mineur. En trois mouvements (Allegro, Largo, Allegro assai), il dure environ un quart d?heure. A la façon d?un concerto grosso, un ?Violino concertino? alterne la direction de l?orchestre et de larges passages solo. L?orchestre est constitué de deux parties de violons, une partie d?alto, une partie de basse et d?une basse continue. Jindrich Feld's Sonata for Flute and Piano is frequently performed by virtuoso flautists. Composed in 1957 the Sonata is elaborate and quirky and has been recorded by leading artists including Jeffrey Khaner and James Galway. Born in Prague Feld (1925-2007) studied Violin and Viola with his parents before studying at the Conservatory and Academy of Music of his native city. His compositions predominantly instrumental soon became popular being performed all over the world. As reflected in his Sonata for Flute and Piano Feld's style is deeply rooted in the Czech musicaltradition but he also integrated the main styles of 20th century Western music. The Sonata is made up of three movements 1. Giocoso (playful) 2. Grave (serious) and 3. Vivace (lively). Each movement of the Sonata presents different challenges from fast semiquaver flourishes to the lyrical top register of the Flute. This Feld piece is highly virtuosic yet an excellent and enjoyable performance for all advanced flautists.
