Les bonnes raisons ne manquaient pas pour m'encourager à composer un concerto pour trombone basse et Orchestre d'Harmonie. Cette composition concrétise, en premier lieu, l'amitié fraternelle qui me lie au tromboniste basse Ben van Dijk depuis trente-cinq ans, et coïncide avec mes trente ans de carrière de musicien professionnel (1er mai 2007). D'autre part, j'ai souhaité apporter ma contribution au répertoire solo pour trombone basse, bien pauvre en oeuvres lyriques qui exploitent pleinement les capacités mélodiques et musicales de l'instrument. Enfin, ce concerto est un hommage à Piet van Dijk (1920-2003), le père de Ben, qui fut un musicien dans l'âme et un être extraordinaire. En tant que professeur de trombone et d'euphonium, il a joué un rôle essentiel dans ma carrière future de musicien et je lui en serai toujours reconnaissant. Un festival ambitieux autour du trombone offrait le cadre idéal pour la création de mon oeuvre : le festival Slide Factory 2007 organisé à Rotterdam par les membres du New Trombone Collective, ambassadeurs idéaux pour la littérature contemporaine pour le trombone. La création de Canticles (Cantiques) fut une expérience enthousiasmante, enrichie par l'étroite collaboration avec Ben van Dijk. D'ailleurs, je tiens à le remercier chaleureusement pour ses excellentes suggestions, son savoir-faire et sa passion. Je suis convaincu que cette pièce trouvera sa place dans les salles de concert ! Canticles est une oeuvre de commande pour le Fonds des Compositeurs néerlandais 'Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst? (Fonds pour la création musicale) à la demande du New Trombone Collective. La première mondiale a eu lieu le 6 mai 2007 à l'église St. Laurens à Rotterdam dans le cadre du festival Slide Factory 2007. Dutilleux's Chorale Cadenza and Fugue for Trombone and Piano has never found its way into the mainstream of Trombone repertoire yet it remains a frequent favourite at virtuoso solo competitions. Chorale Cadenza and Fugue is ideal for trombonists seeking something more substantial and varied. Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) began his career as director of the Musical Illustrations Service on French Radio and Television but he left this position after 18 years to devote himself entirely to composition. As the title suggests Dutilleux's Chorale Cadenza and Fugue is divided in tothree contrasting sections which run seamlessly from one to another. The piece begins with the Trombone playing a lyrical chorale melody accompanied by rich Piano chords. The cadenza is dramatic with the intense Trombone line being played over tremolos from the Piano. This is followed by the angular and rhythmic Fugue initially stated in the low register of the Piano. As the Trombone states the Fugue a countermelody is introduced on the Piano. These themes continue and augment into a virtuosic fanfare motif closing in a grand and dramatic finish. Dutilleux's Chorale Cadenza and Fugue for Trombone and Piano is inspiring challenging motivating and essential to the repertoire of all advanced trombonists.

C'est le samedi 28 juillet 1855, au Conservatoire de Paris, que le concours de la classe de trombone eut lieu. Cette année-là, une matinée suffit à auditionner tous les candidats pour la raison qu'explique Paul Smith, dans la Revue et Gazette musicale: «?Toute la famille des instruments à vent [?] s'était donné rendez-vous avec une harpe dans une seule et même matinée. La guerre s'est chargée d'abréger le concours: beaucoup d'élèves avaient forcement quitté les classes pour suivre leurs régiments en Crimée. Néanmoins, il en restait encore assez pour que le concours fût honorable.?» Le professeur, Antoine Dieppo, présenta ce jour-là deux étudiants qui furent récompensés: Jean-Baptiste-Frédéric Masset (né en 1828) obtint un premier prix tandis que François-Achille-Alfred Dauger (né en 1825) recueillit un deuxième prix. En plus de l'exécution du morceau imposé - le Solo de Trombone de Charles Gounod (1818-1893) présentement édité -, les élèves étaient également soumis à une épreuve de lecture à vue. En 1855, il s'agit d'un allegro pour trombone avec accompagnement de violoncelle d'un compositeur anonyme, morceau déjà imposé en 1852.Le Solo de Trombone de Gounod ne fut jamais publié et la partition disparut bientôt de la circulation, étant déclarée perdue par l'ensemble de biographes du compositeur jusqu'à très récemment. Deux manuscrits ont permis la reconstitution de la présente édition. Le premier - une partie de trombone seul - fut découvert dans une brocante à la fin des années 1990, le second appartient à Frantz Couvez, tromboniste, qui en possède une photocopie reçue de son professeur, Gilbert Moisand. Différents éléments stylistiques confirmèrent rapidement qu'il s'agit bien d'une pièce de Gounod: le style général, proche des Six mélodies pour cor et piano de 1839, certains détours harmoniques - même si la main n'est pas encore tout à fait personnelle - et l'accompagnement de piano, qui ne fut pas sans poser quelques problèmes. L'aspect non pianistique d'autres oeuvres du compositeur, déjà frappant dans les Mélodies pour cor, se retrouve en effet ici : Gounod n'était pas pianiste et détestait réaliser ce genre de réduction, détail confirmé par Gérard Condé. La présente édition réaménage donc certains passages (harmonie complétée ou redistribuée, figurations pianistiques améliorées, superpositions de mains réaménagées?).Ce Solo est écrit en deux mouvements. Le premier, en sol mineur, débute par une introduction andante, étonnement développé par rapport à l'ensemble de la pièce. Ce tutti débouche sur un adagio cantabile en 6/8, véritable aria à la sensualité toute italienne. La ligne instrumentale, soutenue par un balancement régulier de triolet, épouse les contours d'une phrase vocale caractéristique de Bellini ou Donizetti, alors en pleine vogue à Paris. La seconde partie de la pièce en molto pomposo e ben marcato en si bémol majeur, fait office de cabalette, achevant par des figures en triolets d'une difficulté non négligeable.Laurent MadeufParis, septembre 2018Cette première publication du Solo de Gounod est enrichie par la pièce de la lecture à vue (déchiffrage) donnée à la même année.
