Brahms's Ave Maria was composed in 1858. The widely-held opinions in the literature on Brahms - that the work has justifiably been forgotten, the part-writing is monotonous and the style and diction is ponderous - don't do justice to a truly charming piece, based on folksong-like models. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4018000.

Johann Gottlieb Naumann, who today is becoming increasingly well known, achieved recognition during his lifetime as a composer of operas, among them the first Swedish national opera, Gustaf Wasa. In addition he wrote a large number of sacred compositions for the Court of Dresden, where he was employed for many years, including the present Missa in D minor, which was still performed well into the 20th century. This work, probably composed for Christmas in 1794, displays a decidedly pastoral character in the Gloria and Agnus Dei and moreover, is distinguished by charming solo woodwind parts. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4067200.

Carus 70.301/10, which is part of the material associated with this piece, can be used as the choral score. Gabriel Faure composed the Cantique de Jean Racine in 1865, the prizewinning work for the completion of his musical training. The composer expanded the original scoring for choir and organ by adding a string accompaniment; the version with orchestra was first performed in 1906. As a text Faure chose a French adaptation by Jean Racine of the Latin hymn Consors paterni luminis. The Cantique already displays the characteristics of an expressive choral setting typical for Faure, as well as the finely worked out orchestral accompaniment, and together with the Requiem, composed considerably later, it is among the most popular works of the composer. An oboe concerto from the romantic era? Embarassingly, due to the small amount of solo literature for the instrument from this period, this question often asked of oboists, must be answerded with a reference to the few small concert pieces and sets of variations available. The A minor Concerto by Hugo Schuncke, who was a musician at the Court of Stuttgart, fills a need. The work consists of three movements: a virtuoso Allegro, a pastorale Andante and a rhythmic, exciting Bolero in rondo form.

Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario) was composed in the spring of 1786 to fulfill a commission from Joseph II for performance during a visit to Vienna by the Governor-General of the Netherlands. The visitors were meant to be entertained with a short German and an Italian musical comedy during a festival arranged on short notice in Schonbrunn Palace. The choice of composers fell to Mozart and Salieri. Both pieces spoofed the theatrical practices of the day. Der Schauspieldirektor, by Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger, has a loosely-constructed plot that hinges on the vanity of opera singers and the empty-headedness of many traveling companies. Frank Lustig wants to create a new theatrical troupe, for which Herr Eiler is willing to supply money, but only on condition that his lady friend is allowed to join. In the course of the piece, appearances are made by other ladies with resonant names who want to be retained as singers and who attempt to outdo each other until reason is allowed to prevail. In this occasionally unusual, expressive work, Cherubini sensitively follows the drama of the psalm texts, on which the work is based. In concert the work is suitable as an impressive pendant to the masses and requiem settings of Cherubini, Haydn, or Mozart, and also in combination with the great sacred works of the 19th century. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4009000.
