Missa in incerto tempore (The Davison Mass) (2018) was commissioned by the Harvard Glee Club. It was premiered by the Harvard Glee Club, Cambridge, Massachusetts (Andrew Clark, Director of Choral Activities) and the All Saints' Choir of Men and Boys (Ashmont Boy Choir), Dorchester, Massachusetts; (Andrew Sheranian, Organist and Master of Choristers). The Latin title, meaning Mass in uncertain times, refers to the centuries of comfort, inspiration, and spiritual enrichment that the mass (and the musical settings for its celebration) has provided to many individuals through difficulty and uncertainty. I cannot deny that the times in which this piece was composed are the most nationally and internationally uncertain of my own life to date. That fact had a definite impact on the tone and emotional character of the piece. However, there is a universality as well, since one could readily feel that all times have a sense of uncertainty, especially since we never know exactly what the future holds. The first three movements have somewhat enigmatic endings. The end of the Agnus Dei tries to temper (but not erase) that uncertainty with a degree of optimism and fervor in a passionate plea of Dona nobis pacem. Desondanks heeft Philip Sparke een gevarieerde selectievan Engelse melodieen kunnen samenstellen voor dit prachtige 'Festival of Carols' - dat zowel met als zonder koor kan worden uitgevoerd.

Weihnachten, wie es heute in England gefeiert wird, ist eine relativ junge Tradition aus dem 19, Jahrhundert, die der deutsche Ehemann von Konigin Victoria mit in seine neue Heimat brachte. Viele gebrauchliche Weihnachtslieder stammen ebenfalls nichtaus England. Philip Sparke gelang es jedoch, eine abwechslungsreiche Sammlung von Liedern aus seiner Heimat zu diesem schonen englischen Weihnachtslieder-Festival zu formen.Die optional einsetzbaren Chorstimmen sind unter der Artikelnummer AMP227-050 separat erhaltlich.

Ainsi, il fit decouvrir aux Anglais la coutume du sapin et les cartes de Noel, entre autres, contribuant largement au Noel typiquement anglaistel que nous le connaissons aujourd'hui.Bien que les chants de Noel font l'objet d'une longue tradition en Angleterre, de nombreuses melodies que nous chantons proviennent ducontinent europeen ou des Etats-Unis. Je savais bien que le celebrissimeSilent Night (Douce nuit) etait d'origine autrichienne et que Hark, the Herald Angels Sing (Ecoutez le chant des Anges) etait d'origine allemande. Pourtant, quelle ne fut pas ma surprise d'apprendre qu'Away in a Manger (Sur la paillefraiche) ou encore We Three Kings nous venaient des Etats-Unis et que Ding, Dong Merrily on High etait un noel d'origine francaise. Ce célèbre chant de Noël anglo-saxon (dont la mélodie est également connue sous le nom d’Humility) a été composé, en 1771, par John Goss (1800-1880), sur un texte d’Edward Caswall (1841-1878). John Goss est né Fareham dans le Comté du Hampshire, en Angleterre. En 1811, il est admis comme choriste la Chapelle Royale, où il étudie auprès de John Stafford Smith et de Thomas Attwood, organiste la cathédrale Saint-Paul de Londres. En 1824, il est nommé organiste l’église Saint-Luc de Chelsea. la mort de Thomas Attwood, en 1838, John Goss lui succède comme organiste la cathédrale Saint-Paul. Il compose de nombreux motets et odes pour divers services religieuxexceptionnels célébrés en la cathédrale. En 1872, il quitte son poste Saint-Paul et est fait chevalier par la reine Victoria. Parallèlement ses fonctions d’organiste l’église Saint-Luc et la cathédrale Saint-Paul, John Goss a enseigné l’harmonie l’Académie Royale de Musique de Londres pendant quarante-sept ans. Parmi ses nombreuses odes encore chantées, on peut citer Infant Holy, Infant Lowly, Praise My Soul et See Amid the Winter's Snow.
