As with scarcely any other work of the 17th century, Monteverdi's Vespers has found its way into today's repertoire. Nevertheless, the Vespers still leaves open many questions. The new edition, with its critical examination of the sources, takes up these oft-discussed issues concerning scoring possibilities, performance practice, transpositions and liturgical unity. It is based on all of the surviving copies of the print of 1610 and the earliest handwritten entries have also been critically examined and evaluated. Mozart's Concerto K. 453 enjoyed great popularity during the composer's lifetime and was widely known through copies and a print. The state of the sources is thus multi-faceted yet unequivocal: the primary source is the rediscovered autograph, which was considered lost after 1945 and was not at the disposal of the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe. The editorial quality of the new edition is guaranteed not only by Schiffs sensitive fingerings and stylistically well-grounded cadenzas, but also by the Mozart scholar Stephan Horner to whom Henle has entrusted its urtext editions. Breitkopf/Henle cooperation means: Each work is edited according to predetermined standardized editorial guidelines. First and foremost among the sources consulted were Mozarts handwritten scores, being the most important sources. In some cases they had not been available when the previous editions were being prepared. Eighteenth-century England was full of amateur musicians making music without fanfare at home. Some of them were also gifted composers, and among the best was Benjamin Skinner (1728–1757) from what was then the village of Bromley near Bow, today part of London’s East End. Skinner’s main publication was a set of six sonatas for flute, violin or solo harpsichord, which came out in 1752. These unpretentious pieces, then as now well suited to performance by amateurs or by musicians in training, are full of delights, mixing stylistic features inspired by Purcell or Handel with evocations of English popular vocal music and also the newer galant style introduced from Italy.  Perhaps these sonatas work best with flute and basso continuo, but the other two performance options are good alternatives.
