The composer writes:Pilgrim was inspired it will be no surprise to learn by reading Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress - Vaughan Williams's great opera on the subject had fascinated me from its first performance yet it was a long time before I caught up with this essential item in any well-stocked library of English classics. It made a great impression not least because of its theme of a journey of self-discovery and a rediscovery or renewal of faith. These are ideas which have a strong interest for me not in religious terms but in their application to every aspect of human life (including great journeys) and this piece reflects my response in musical terms to this concern. The tempo of the whole piece which lasts about 18 minutes is basically slow. There are two quick episodes but these act somewhat like the trio sections of a classical scherzo save that the tempo relationships are inverted (the classical trios would have been slower not quicker) and the canvas is much larger being that of a single substantial slow movement. The form of the whole is perhaps fantasia-like rather than having any relationship to classical forms such as sonata or rondo - some motifs and themes are varied as the work develops and the opening chords are of primary importance throughout the work. There has been no attempt to convey any pictorial elements deriving from Bunyan's great book. There is however one feature which upon completion of the score struck me with some force which is that almost all the thematic material is essentially striving upwards - there is a constant upward movement (sometimes over a lengthy period) throughout the work. Pilgrim was commissioned by the Luton Music Club for the Raphael Ensemble with funds provided by the Eastern Arts Board and Bedfordshire County Council and is dedicated to the Luton Music Club. The first performance was given in Luton on February 10th 1997 and followed as part of a joint scheme by performances in the same week at the Music Clubs of Bedford and Leighton Buzzard.

for alto voice and string trio. Par BRYARS GAVIN. Incipit Vita Nova (A new life is beginning) was written for male alto and string trio and sets those short phrases that appear in Latin rather than Italian in Dante's La Vita Nuova (New Life). It was composed in February 1989 to celebrate the birth of Vita, the first child of my friends Erica and Robert Hewison. I had decided to write the piece long before the birth but did not start until I knew whether the baby was a boy or a girl, and the baby's name (Vita). At first I looked for all uses of the word 'Vita' (life) among Pico della Mirandola's Conclusiones (having already set Pico for Glorious HiIl, my first piece for the Hilliard Ensemble in 1988) and eventually added one of these sentences ('Omnis vita est immortalis') as the penultimate line of the text, while working on La Vita Nuova as the main source. The first performance was given by David James at St. Mary de Castro Church in Leicester on 1 April 1989, and shortly afterwards was performed with the first performances of Cadman Requiem in Lyon and Marseilles.

Par VAUGHAN WILLIAMS RALPH. On his return to civilian life after five years Army service in the First World War, Vaughan Williams revised some pre-war works, such as The Lark Ascending and his opera Hugh the Drover , and embarked on new compositions - the Pastoral Symphony , the one-act Bunyan episode The Shepherds of the Delectable Mountains and the Mass in G minor - all of which have outwardly in common a serene tranquillity. But beneath the surface, especially of the symphony, is a requiem-like mood, a legacy of the war. This ambiguity can also be sensed in the three songs -or rondels - for voice and string trio which he called Merciless Beauty. The texts are attributed to Chaucer./ Répertoire / Chant et Piano

First performance 12 October 2011 at St George's Hall Liverpool by David Pyatt (horn) and the Sacconi String Quartet as part of the Centenary Concert of the Rodewald Concert Series.Composer's NoteThroughout my musical life I have found the horn one of the most evocative and beautiful of all instruments and it is no surprise that I have written a number of works for it including a concerto a trio with violin and piano and a triptych of concert works for horn and piano. Writing a work for horn and string quartet has long been an ambition therefore fuelled not only by my love of the instrument but also by theastonishingly small repertoire of horn quintets. This work was commissioned to celebrate their centenary by the Rodewald Concert Society Liverpool who gave me an invaluable education in the masterpieces of the chamber music repertoire at their concerts which I attended regularly during my schooldays. The quintet is dedicated to Nancy and Douglas Brady two of my oldest and closest friends from Liverpool. It was written in 2010/11 and is continuous. There are however three main ?movements?: an opening quick one which is interrupted twice by brief slow interludes referring to the motto heard at the start a substantial slow movement which also contains two short scherzando sections (much as Brahms?s A major Violin Sonata has two quick trio sections in its slow movement) and a fast finale a descendant of the Beethoven one-in-a-bar scherzo. The scherzando interludes interwoven with the slow movement are frequently muted and have something of an other-worldly atmosphere perhaps Queen Mab came to deliver me of some dreams while I was writing it. At the end of the finale the furious activity gives way to an elegiac conclusion which I feel was greatly influenced by events in the world outside at the time of composition the music descending to a quiet sustained C on horn and cello. The work lasts just over 20 minutes and was first
