When you have the good fortune to visit Red Rock country in the southwestern United States, you will all at once feel that majesty and beauty in the towering red landscape. You can trek, bike, paddle, ride horseback or drive through the canyons, past the strangely shaped rocks and over the enormous boulders. Each time you turn a corner you will be dazzled by yet another magnificent vista. The Red Rock areas in Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico formed millions of years ago when that part of North America was primarily under water. The water left behind the shells and skeletons of sea creatures that gradually turned into limestone and similar rocks. Beginning 225 million years ago, the earth's crust began to move and the seabed slowly rose. Streams entering the shallow water deposited mud and sand that turned into shale and marine sandstone. As the land continued to rise and dry out, some of the rocks oxidized (combined with oxygen) and turned red in color. Subsequently the area was covered with sands that eventually compressed into what is called Aztec sandstone. Sometimes, when iron was concentrated in the rock, the sandstone turned a bright red color. Following the introduction, the music in Red Rock Rag takes on a typical ragtime melody and rhythm. It then transitions by changing key, time signature and the structure into a swing waltz. At m. 60, it moves into a combined time signature of one measure of 3/4 time and two measures of 2/4 time with an occasional lick in the bass line. Finally, it moves back into the swing-waltz style and finishes with the original ragtime melody. Red Rock Rag is challenging stylistically and rhythmically. It would be appropriate to study both the ragtime and swing styles while working on it. Orchestra SKU: SU.32040140 For Orchestra. Composed by Amy Riebs Mi...(+)
Orchestra SKU: SU.32040140 For Orchestra. Composed by Amy Riebs Mills. Orchestra. Full Score. Subito Music Corporation #32040140. Published by Subito Music Corporation (SU.32040140). 2222; 4331; timp, 2 perc, pno; stgs Duration: 13'30 Composed: 2016 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC Like a modern Pictures at an Exhibition…. Ha Shamayim is an original piece for orchestra that was inspired by photographs taken by the Hubble space telescope. Each section is inspired by one photo; the title of each section is the title that NASA gave to the photograph. The words Ha Shamayim are Hebrew for The Heavens. They are written in Genesis 1:1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The words are also seen in Psalm 19. Section I: Warped Edge-On Galaxy ESO 510-G13 The piece begins in outer space with its glistening stars. Glissandi are used to depict the strange but beautiful warp seen in the photograph. Section II: Galaxy Fires at Neighboring Galaxy Suddenly the piece erupts as one galaxy fires blue gas at its neighbor. They engage in a cosmic battle. Section III: Youthful-looking Galaxy May Be an Adult The adolescent galaxy is personified by a humorous, gawky melody reminiscent of teenage boys who walk on feet that are still too big. Occasionally there is an argument with an authority figure, but the joy of exploring the universe quickly returns. Section IV: Star Birth in Galaxy M83 The dramatic photograph looks like a womb with veins. The music begins on one note, then it begins to explore the initial swelling and stretching. It morphs into an energetic fast theme, still growing. Ultimately it becomes glorious and expansive, like the new star. Section V: String of ‘Cosmic Pearls’ Surrounds an Exploding Star The first theme is a happy circle dance inspired by the circle of white dots in the photograph. The second theme is noble and joyful. It is reminiscent of the melody in the famous chorus in Haydn’s The Creation with the words from Psalm 19, The heavens are telling the glory of God. The music then has flashbacks to the earlier sections, and ends in triumph. The five sections in Ha Shamayim are continuous with no breaks. Mezzo-Soprano & Piano SKU: SU.32040040 For Mezzo-Soprano & Piano. ...(+)
Mezzo-Soprano & Piano SKU: SU.32040040 For Mezzo-Soprano & Piano. Composed by Amy Riebs Mills. Vocal/Choral, Solo Voice. Accompanied by piano. Piano Vocal Score. Subito Music Corporation #32040040. Published by Subito Music Corporation (SU.32040040). Mezzo-Soprano & Piano Duration: 17' Composed: 2014 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC These three art songs can be performed independently or in sequence, at any time of the year. Stuart McAlpine’s profound text explores three men from the Christmas story, Joseph, the Inn-keeper, and Simeon. The creative and beautiful musical settings allow for powerfully dramatic interpretation and performance. To Joseph (who taught me how to look at art) The singer sings to Joseph, …you beheld a work of art, the making of a holy heart… and watching through Joseph’s eyes, when hung at last, its meaning was decreed. (4:40) The Inn-keeper’s Lament McAlpine brilliantly explores the possibility…what if the inn-keeper who turned away Mary & Joseph later became the inn-keeper who accepted the injured man brought in by the Good Samaritan? This powerfully dramatic piece depicts the Bethlehem inn-keeper’s bravado, Caeser’s decree was heaven sent, as guests raised glasses, I raised rent! But as the enormity of his mistake became apparent, in later years he bemoans, …if I’d known then what I know now… and finally declares at the end, I know now! (7:50) Simeon’s Last Prayer Simeon sings of being summoned to the temple where he holds his infant Savior. …then as grandfathers do, rejoiced as if he were my one-and-only too. As he leaves he whispers his final prayer, …dismiss your servant, to find You face-to-face. With this arrangement, my goal is to maintain the integrity of the original work, while making it accessible to the younger orchestra. An important aspect of the successful performance of this piece is maintaining an energetic tempo. The repeated eighth notes in the accompaniment should be played cleanly and crisply to maintain momentum. There are many places where abrupt changes in dynamics occur. For example, m. 1 begins with a string unison forte, which suddenly drops to piano at m. 11. Accents, staccatos, and other articulations should be carefully observed. To be effective, crescendos should begin at a reasonable volume, so they have somewhere to go dynamically. I hope you and the orchestra enjoy this arrangement.
