In June 1997 I was in New York and had a free weekend. On Sunday morning I was awoken early by a great deal of banging and saw that barriers and roadblocks had been erected throughout Central Park. Why? I soon heard the answer: a great parade. When the Americans put together a parade they really mean it! This one lasted 3 hours and brought the center of New York to a standstill. Bands, dancers and choirs marched past in celebration of the Jewish faith. New York Parade is completely original but its starting point in my imagination was a marching band, a choir and Broadway. The marching band starts in the distance, passes by and as it moves away we hear the next block of performers singing, almost chanting, a hymn (called Jewish Song). The groups suddenly turn into Broadway, as a song from an imaginary show intervenes but then the band and choir return in counterpoint and all three themes come together.

Dr. James Bicigo, Associate Professor of Trombone, University of Alaska, Anchorage Virtuoso piece, the dramatic first movement opens with a Bold statement followed by the beautiful love theme. It reaches up to the Cry of the Heart, then everything ruptures and crashes. Now the trombonist must rebuild and gain strength through dramatic cadenzas until reaching the recapitulation where the opening Bold melody is transformed into a majestic march in 3/4 time. The love theme returns, and the movement ends in triumph. The second movement is a setting of the famous Japanese folksong, Red Dragonfly. The trombonist and pianist play the lovely song amidst the sound of fluttering wings that appear and disappear like memories of the heart. Thank you to the Nihon Gakugeki Kyoukai Foundation for permission to use the melody in this trombone sonata. A solo glissando opens the third movement in American folk dance style with tongue in cheek and twinkle in both eyes. The subsequent variations include a perfect triple canon, a taste of New Orleans jazz, and a dramatic augmentation which spills into a flashback of the first movement’s love theme. This melts away and we recapture a glimpse of the Red Dragonfly melody, this time growing to the Triumphant restatement of the first movement’s main theme. And finally, the exuberant coda drives to a spectacular ending. About The New Bennett Band Book Series

The Bennett Band Books published in four volumes starting in 1923 were used to teach the march form and style to millions of young band musicians in the middle of the twentieth century. Twelve of the legendary Henry Fillmore's tuneful band gems (written using the pseudonym Harold Bennett) have been collected together by Larry Clark to form the first volume of The New Bennett Band Books. This volume concentrates on 2/4 time and the keys of Bb major, Eb major, and Ab major. In addition, a helpful march warm-up section, composed by Larry Clark, is included to help you teach the march form and style to young students. There is also the added benefit of a full recording of each march performed by a professional band on the CD that is included in the full score. This is a valuable collection for any level band to use for marches at contest/festival performance or for sight-reading purposes.

Majesty is a powerful and spectacular overture. Right from the start, the brass open the work brilliantly before making way for a majestic hymn mostly played by the woodwind. The end of the piece repeats the opening fanfare as a monumental finale in the style of an American symphonic march. This work was commissioned by the Bourbourg Wind Orchestra (France), conducted by Claude Deconinck, on the occasion of its 230th anniversary. This piece was premiered by the commissioning orchestra on 19 November 2022, just two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Naturally, this work is dedicated to her.
