Entrance Antiphons for the Church Year contains thirty antiphon texts from the Graduale Simplex, translated from Latin and set to newly composed music. The psalm verses appointed for these antiphons are taken from the Grail translation (1963). As with the Responsorial Psalm of the Mass, the assembly sings the antiphon after its intonation by the cantor/choir, repeating it after each verse of the psalm. The number of psalm verses which are sung may vary according to need. The singing of the doxology, Glory to the Father, while recommended, is optional. In several cases (e.g., Christmas and Easter), the assembly sings a refrain—a simple acclamation in Latin—and the actual antiphon text is sung by the cantor/choir. The antiphon functions as a first and final verse. It is thought that liturgical singing in the early Church consisted in part of such short acclamatory phrases. Many of the antiphons in this collection are proper to a specific Sunday, solemnity, or feast. The rest are seasonal in nature and, like the common Responsorial Psalms of the Lectionary, may be chosen according to what seems best for the occasion. The antiphons of Christmas Day and Easter Sunday could be used at daily Masses during their octaves. Notations in the scores of some antiphons suggest alternate occasions when they are appropriate. Regarding performance, these compositions were conceived with flexibility in mind. Assembly participation and instrumental accompaniment are assumed. SATB choral singing is effective, but not necessary. Discrete use of descants where provided can lend an air of festivity. Psalm verses might be sung by an entire choir, by a small group or cantor, or a combination of both.

Hungary has a thousand-year-old tradition of reverence for the Virgin Mary. In the course of the centuries the Church has found more and more occasions for the celebration of Mary. The greatest is the celebration of Mary?s assumption into heaven, which coincides with the anniversary of the death of Saint Stephen, on August 15. The texts of these choral works originate from various supplicatory prayers from the office, vocal texts and hymns. The six choral works don?t form a cycle, since the texts are associated with different liturgies. The choruses: Regina caeli ? antiphon for Easter, Sub tuum praesidium ? antiphon, Maria Mater gratiae ? short hymn, Ave Regina caelorum ?antiphon for Lent, Ave maris stella ? Hymn to Mary, Virgo parens Christi benedicta ? responsorium, can be sung singly or in any combination.

Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich ist eine geistliche Liedstrophe, die Martin Luther in einer Zeit, die von Aufständen und Unsicherheiten geprägt war, im Jahre 1529 in Wittenberg als eine Art Adaption der gregorianischen AntiphonDa pacem, Domine, in diebus nostris nachgedichtet hat. Sowohl bei dieser Antiphon als auch bei der fünfzeiligen Liedstrophe handelt es sich um ein Gebet um den politisch-sozialen, den irdischen und inneren Frieden. Das in diebus nostris (zu unsern Zeiten) ist Aufruf, Ermunterung und Auftrag zugleich nicht nachzulassen in dem Bemühen, diesen Frieden zu erflehen und ihn auch tatkräftig herbeizuführen. Denn dass dieser Friede das Ergebnis eines Kampfes ist, den allerdings nur Gott - mit seinen Waffen - führen kann, auch davon spricht dieser Text. Auch die Melodie des Liedes wird dem Reformator Luther zugeschrieben. Sie ist tongeschlechtlich mit der Antiphon verwandt, geht selbst aber wohl auf den ebenfalls lateinischen Hymnus Veni, redemptor gentium (Komm, Erlöser der Heiden), einem Adventhymnus des Ambrosius von Mailand zurück.
